coconut oil - making molds
I don't know if anyone has tried this, but I figured it might help someone!
I started feeding the dogs coconut oil a month or two ago. We got the tubs from Costco. We keep the house cool enough that the coconut oil is a solid - and it's a pain to scrape it out of the tub for each dog. Not to mention it's impossible to measure how much they're getting. I was thinking about a better way to feed it a while ago, and came up with the idea of candy or baking molds...so we went shopping today in search of some molds to try. At AC Moore (craft store) we had a 55% off coupon - I got this nice silicone "mini-loaf" pan for about $7, the slots are about the size of a stick of butter. We also got some peanut butter cup candy molds to try. I gently heated the coconut oil in my double boiler, distributed it into the molds, stuck them outside to cool...and voila! They popped right out of the molds.   The peanut butter cup molds held about 1.5 tbsp of oil - I'm not sure exactly how much the "butter" mold held, but I'd guess almost half a cup. I'm really happy with how they turned out, and this will make feeding coconut oil MUCH easier.

I have little racecar jello molds, wonder if they'd work(I'd need to cool the oil some for sure!)
Very good idea, I hate scraping out the jar, it seems to fly out of the spoon when I do it! Thanks for sharing! |

Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees, so you don't have to heat it a whole lot to get it to melt. I tried to heat it very gently, in case the heat would damage the oil.
The candy molds I got were cheap plastic, but they worked out great. Something like this... I was also thinking - if I have any other supplements to give, I could mix them right into the bar and just dose everything at once. I'd just have to figure out the dosage/proportions. |

I just use the cheap little plastic ice trays. Hahaha. I am old enough to have those in my memory banks.

Wow great idea!! And you're right- it IS a pain to scrape out the oil, especially near the bottom of the container. Thanks for sharing!

The oil should be organic, extra-virgin. Mine is also hard (my house is always cold) but I just chunk it off with a spoon. When it is really hard a grapefruit spoon works great (if any of you know what that is!).
I would be careful about putting something that's been heated into cheap plastic molds...they do leach carcinogens.
