I'm sure a lot of you might get e-mail updates from Susan of 'The Truth about dog food' but he one today really leaves me with more questions than answers.
She writes about a Vet friend who had a client come in with a sick dog. The Vet had sceen this dog for two years and had discussed the importance of dog food with the client. Supposably, the client was feeding 'high end kibble and people food' but (and heres where I really question things, the dog had been loosing weight since last summer. Rather than taking the dog to the Vet, they decided to 'beef the dog up some' by feeding Ole Yeller. Now suddenly the dog is squirting out blood, its intestines are messed up, the tongue split, etc. I'm sorry, but don't you think if the dog was loosing weight it would have been better to take the dog to the Vet as soon as you notice the weight loss. OR if you want to 'beef the dog up some' and they've given the dog the best so far, wouldn't you think they would have chosen something besides Ole Yeller?? The entire story smells of fish to me! I use to read what Susan had to say about dog food but now I can't help but to wonder how many of her stories are full of bull. http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/art...-pet-food.html

That does seem kind of nuts. My golden got fed crap food his whole life and didn't have a single issue. Not saying it's good to feed bad food, just saying that I doubt it caused those problems. Sounds like some scare tactic propaganda going on.

BS. Pure BS.
I am the first to recommend something other than grocery store brands but those brands there also meet minimum requirements and I just picked up a purebred GSD last night, gorgeous girl (owner surrender) and she is 9mos. old, beautiful dog. Heck I won't even tell ya what she ate, I'll just post photos and let people guess, but she's shiny, filled out, has a nice coat and good ears, etc. She stinks due to living outside only for her entire time on earth, 9mos. of it, but a good bath and she'll be fine I am sure. I know people whose dogs lived to be 15 + yrs. on Ol' Roy and Purina. PS. If the story is true (the dog was sick) it was ulcerative colitis if anything. And not "caused by" eating Ole Yeller.

And check out the other story on her newsletter (email).
A Peek inside Pet Food Manufacturing Through television commercials, we are provided with images that pet food is being made with carefully chosen meats and vegetables, hand prepared. However the truth is often quite different than the advertising. A sort of press release explaining a new pet food manufacturing plant gives us a more realistic understanding of how pet food kibble is made. It isn't pretty. http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/a-peek-inside-pet-food-manufacturing.html Ok, so she's upset because they are not making dog food in someone's kitchen? She's upset because employees are required to wear hair nets, uniforms, etc? I can't help but to think she's gone off the deep end.

Just so everyone knows, I do believe in feeding the better dog foods. I feel better with ingredents I think they should have in my dogs diet. But I sure don't expect, nor would I want, someone making my dogs food in their kitchen.

The intestinal stuff could be an allergy or IBD or something, which could be related to a food switch.
A far as the weight loss thing, I had a senior dog who kept losing weight. I kept taking her to the vet and they did exam, bloodwork, then ultrasound, x-rays and we never found a cause. I would up her food intake and/or switch to a higher calorie food, she'd gain a little but then after a while she'd start losing again so I'd up her food intake and go higher calorie/protein again and the same thing would happen. ![]() The only abnormal thing they found was a slightly enlarged spleen, but it was totally normal on the ultrasound just large. |
