So Xena has been itching, biting and scratching her legs, and her belly. She has quite a few hotspots and now the hair is missing on some parts. She itches ALL the time.
Normally she has allergies only on her feet in the summer only and she has been to the vet regarding that issue and they think it is the grass. She was prescribed different wipes and medication which didn't work. But now it's winter and she has them all over her body. She's obviously allergic to something. After a few visits from vets all they could do is suggest what it could be. I had her there today and they said to put her on a food with very limited ingredients. They recommended their prescription dog food but it is $80 per bag and we can't afford that. She was on Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Rice, but she has been on Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice. Anyone else have this problem and what food they switched to solve the problem? It also has to be something that isn't crazy expensive. Thanks |

This is my favorite product line. My golden did well during his elimination diet using these foods- although the herring and sweet potato is not a "true" L.I.D food it is what we started with and we gradually reintroduced other proteins (which are the most common food allergens) without issue:
Natural Dog Food, Cat Food and Puppy Food for Pets With Food Sensitivity ? California Natural Many people have had great results with this brand/line: **** Van Patten's Natural Balance Allergy Formulas for Dogs And I have heard good things about their L.I.D foods, although they only have lamb and turkey at this time: Nature's Variety: Instinct Grain-Free Kibble Diets for Dogs | Nature's Variety To me it sounds like your girl most likely has atopy rather than a true food allergy, but the elimination diet process can be helpful in making a final determination. There are also several allergy tests that your vet can administer. We eventually went with the Heska for my guy, dust mites are our culprit, and we are controlling the problem with allergy meds and a very low dosage of steroid as needed for flares. eta a helpful link ![]() http://www.labbies.com/atopy.htm Last edited by GrammaD; 01-18-2012 at 06:49 PM. |

So sorry you are dealing with this. I dealt with allergy and food issues for months on end. Turns out, I'm not sure the food was the problem. After trying several foods, I went to raw and Maverick loves it. She is doing very well. Maverick had the itchiness too. She would scratch all night. I tried the following two products and she improved greatly. Ia lso had her an Bendaryl for a while.
Doc Ackerman's Instant Hot Spot Relief Spray Dog Cat Grooming Only Natural Pet Skin & Itch Dog & Cat Homeopathic Remedy These products are not expensive at all either. I think the combo of the raw and these products helped my Maverick! Even though I don't think the food was the actual source of the problem, the raw has made her healthier and boosted her immune system. Therefore, her body is reacting better to whatever was causing her to itch and scratch. Good luck! I know how frustrating it is. |

Thanks for the advice guys. After a lengthy discussion with one of the guys at the local pet food stores, who is also training to be some kind of dog food nutricianist, I decided to pick up Fromm Grain Free Salmon Tunalini. We are on one week of mixing the food. She seems to be doing slightly less itching, but we are supposed to give it at least 4 weeks until we can really tell. Plus we are still mixing the pro plan in to ween her off.

I feed Hope Taste of the Wild, cleared up her issues with skin and ear infections within 60 days, and her coat is great now. She doesn't really seem to like it much but the vet bills were killing me.
She used to get infections between her toes, and under her dew claws, and her feet turned red from the licking, as well as ear infections.. Now her coat is twice as thick and no foot issues in a couple of years now. |
