Default ANOTHER bad bag?

Since we got her I've been feeding Riley a different food than Tucker (8 yr old lab). He's rather difficult to get transitioned to a new food, but I found one we both liked and that was that.

Riley came to me on Diamond. I transitioned her to Wellness LB puppy then moved her to the 5 stage (blue bag). She was doing very well then I bought a new bag (after having her on this for many months, possibly a year) and within a few days she had major diarrhea. Trip to vet and testing showed it was nothing like worms or anything.

Then it hit me, after getting her straight on chicken and rice, she'd go right back to diarrhea once I got her back to her food. The food must be the culprit. I tried putting her on Tucker's food since she would frequently swipe mouthfuls of his when she could with no issues. However it didn't work out and she ended up with loose stool again.

So I saw someone mention on here Purina One and grabbed a small bag of that and within a day she had nice firm poo. I sighed at the thought of feeding her "grocery store food" but Yay the price!

I then caught Tucker snatching Riley's food. So once his bag ran out, I just started feeding him the same. Made life very easy.

Now, we've gone through several bags and many months with NO loose poo from Riley. (Tucker has a stomach of steel). I bought a new bag last Thursday, and by Sunday Riley has diarrhea. I put her on chicken with some pumpkin last night to help.

now, she got into the litter box the other day. She's done this many many times before whenever she managed to thwart the security measures. I've never noticed diarrhea resulting from this, so I'm suspecting the food. However, I'm not seeing anything from Tucker.. until yesterday and this morning. (by now they've been eating from this bag five days), He went poo last night and it was firm and normal. about 10 minutes later he poo's again and it's pudding and only a very small amount. Then this morning I"m awoken by him throwing up some foam. it's not entirely out of the ordinary for him, but given the issues Riley is having I'm now very suspicious about this bag of food.

Can you really have this much trouble from dog food? My plan is to introduce probiotics into their diet, especially Riley. I also want to look into the Pro Plan sensitive stomach and skin for Riley at least. I've tried orijen with her early on but that was just too rich. Tucker never liked it either. I've tried TOTW as well and they just seem to cause loose stool. I also know to transition slowly incorporating small amounts of the new food over time.

Would you completely write off a dog food brand if you had an issue with one bag? (providing there's nothing else medically found to be causing the trouble)

Just wanted to say that I hope that you can find a food to agree with both of your babies. It can be a very tricky situation, one that I don't have much knowledge about. Good luck.

Which variety of Purina ONE are you using? The reason that I ask is that Purina ONE has a Sensitive Systems variety that is just a notch less than Purina Pro Plan's Sensitive Skin and Stomach and may be available locally to you.

Things can happen in manufacturing. Not saying that is what happened. But it can. Don't forget that a little pumpkin can help firm things back up. When in doubt listen to your gut!

I've fed many brands over the years...sworn some off for a period, then tried again....but right now all is good with the Natures Logic (Primary food of Angeles and Cotton) and raw with Jack. Angeles and Cotton will get a little of the raw too (Louis gets some raw mixed with a little canned - he is almost 16 years old and whatever he will eat I'm happy with - he is missing half his teeth so kibble is not an easy thing for him) and I leave the Natures Logic kibble out.

can dogs get stomach flu (I'll start a new thread in health section)

Here are the ingredients in your Purina One SmartBlend Lam and Rice -
Product Details-SmartBlend Lamb & Rice Formula - PurinaONE.com

There are two sources of corn (corn gluten meal and whole grain corn) and two sources of soybeans (soy flakes and soybean meal). I would evaluate other dog choices food in light of this.

This is going to sound crazy, but how's your water supply? I, along with several of my friends in the neighborhood, were having issues with dogs having diarrhea intermittently. The water here doesn't taste good so we all drink filtered or have water delivery. We figured since several dogs in the neighborhood were having the same issue it might be the water. Started filtering the dogs' water and never had another problem.

I honestly never even considered that. I'm hesitant to blame the water though as I drink it myself... but ... who knows. good thought! thanks.
