I have a 10 month old girl, and she is getting low on her bag of Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice, only reason i could afford her some nice food was because i got a coupon. She went through it so fast though and i doubt after just losing my job she will continue eating better than I do (haha)
So i was hoping to get some suggestions before i head to the pet store and read every bags label. Blue cost about 2 dollars a pound (60 bucks a bag), and most 'cheaper' foods with fillers and stuff are around 1 dollar a pound (or around 30 bucks a bag). I just cant afford the more expensive foods right now, so i was wondering what are some other choices i have that are a little more affordable in between the two ranges mentioned above. I really appreciate everyones help here, i have learned a lot of great things. |

If money is an issue, stay out of PetSmart and PetCo. My first choice for affordable, good quality food is my local independently owned feed store. My second choice is Tractor Supply Co. My third is Costco. Any one of those should have good quality food for around $1 a pound or less.
Brands like: Victor Kirkland 4Health Diamond Naturals Eagle Pack VeRus Native

I'd say 4Health, and Diamond Natural. Do you have a Tractor Supply store in your area? Also, you could call the manufacturer and ask them to mail you coupons-they usually will.

I've had a gastroenterologist, my regular vet and a professor at a vet school all tell me that ProPlan is as good as anything for a lot less money.
My pup had GI problems the first couple months we had her (came to us using blue buffalo) due to the GI issues she was on special GI food for about a month then we switched over to the ProPlan. She has done well, coat glossy, no diarrhea. I feel guilty sometimes because it seems everyone is feeding much higher priced foods, but it seems to work. Plus due to the earlier issues, I'm kinda afraid to make any changes in diet. |

If your dog is doing well, I would not change anything

Canidae and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul are both reasonably priced good food. I believe they are around $1/lb.

I would look up Enhance Endurance 27-17. It's good enough for New York State K-9 in the Albany area.
www.enhance3022.com even the Hunters Edge is great if you don't want the higher protein. It's about 39.99 for a 40# bag, the endurance I think is around $44.00. There is another food some service guys in Pittsburgh use called VF Complete. The active adult is 26-15 same company makes both foods. Just a little different protein/fat ratio. |

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I went to Tractor Supply. It wasnt too far. I had never thought of looking for dog food there. I got a bag of 4Health and i think next time i will try the Diamond Naturals. The 4Health seemed just slightly better. The first three ingredients were Chicken, Chicken Meal, and Brown Rice. Which is amazing. Anything like that at a pet store would be 60 bucks plus, like Blue Buffalo, and these are slightly bigger bags. Thanks for the help, now hopefully i wont have to spend as much. And she likes it too. |
