Default Rabbit Shortage

Okay for all the jokes out there you will love this one. There is currently a rabbit shortage for dog food. Rabbits?

Of all animals how can there not be enough rabbits? LOL

Anyway thought I would pass that on since all of a sudden Royal Canin and a couple other brands that use rabbit have been slow to the shelf.

I contact Royal Canin who stated that yes, there is a current shortage in the supply chain of rabbits.

I am wondering if a brand out there is buying up rabbits to get ready to launch a new kibble as that sometimes causes a shortage of a certain protein.

My boy only eats rabbit so this is fun

I wonder how many raw feeders use rabbit? I'm shocked as well since rabbits can breed early (used to be a member on a rabbit forum), so it weird there is such a shortage! Thanks for the heads up!

My dogs don't like rabbit. I had a cheap source for it and they turned their nose up at it, even furcovered.
Maybe this could be a lucrative business for those out of work, raising rabbits for the new demand. Sensitive digestion/allergies is an asset afterall?

Good! Leave the rabbits alone.

I can't speak for the captive rabbits if this is the issue or not, but I have an uncle that lives out in the boonies (literally the middle of nowhere) in Utah and he was telling me there is a major rabbit disease going through the rabbit population there. I believe this is what he was talking about. Tularemia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here in South Texas we have a fire ant problem. They are killing off newborn bunnies in the wild. So there is a shortage of wild bunnies, along with other normal ground nesting animals.

Just throwing that out there because I don't feel like getting back to work....

I love bunnies too,

But in my case it is the only protein source that resolved my boys digestive issues. So I thought, rabbits, no problem. There should be a ton of them out there.

After looking at some of the responses on the ants and other issues, I can see now why there might be a problem.

Knowing my luck if I used kangaroo, there would be some sort of kangaroo H1N1 that would stop production of kangaroos.

Same thing happened when I had a female GSD that needed raw pumpkin daily in her meals. That year there was some sort of disease that caused a raw pumpkin shortage.

I guess the rabbits are all in my backyard, no shortage here! The little pests are always in my hay

I understand. It's just picturing my little bunnies wearing their Santa hats and sitting on the couch with me makes it hard for me to think of them as dog food.
