We are switching the dogs food to try and help with Harley's extremely loose stools. The formula we are looking at comes in regular and large breed. Does anyone use a "large breed food" The only difference I can see between the two is that the kibble is bigger and the protein and fat content is less in the large breed formula. Why would this be?
ETA: would you choose a food with a chicken based protein over a lamb based protein?

It's the calcium. Puppy formulas have more calcium than large breed puppy formulas, so that's probably the difference.
Search the diet and nutrition section or feeding my puppy section of the forum for "calcium" and you'll find a million threads and posts on the subject. As for the chicken vs lamb, if the dog was allergic to chicken, i'd pick lamb. If there are no allergies, i'd pick chicken.

From everything I've learned here, go large breed. Not sure how old your dog is but if they're still growing it helps them to grow nice and slow.

It's not a puppy vs. adult food either. It's regular vs. large breed. Thoughts?

Oh wait, I totally read it wrong. I was thinking you meant puppy food and then reread what you wrote below. (Oh it's been a long day)
I've always just fed my dogs a regular dog food. When you compare the two between most brands of food, they're almost identical besides the price. (They like to jack up the "large breed" and "small breed" type formulas)What are you feeding right now and how much? Have you tried backing off to see if you're just feeding too much? Could be an allergy too causing the loose stools. Any itchiness, redness, ect on the dog that could also be a sign of an allergy? |

Im not a believer in large breed, senior, less active, ect..... Kibbles.
All my dogs get adult or all life stages food. The only time I agree with one of the others would be in the case of a very small dog that NEEDS small kibbles in order to be able to get then in their mouth. Then I don't have a problem with a "small breed or small bites kibble.
