I couple months ago I made the switch to Orijen for my 2 GSDs. My club is able to buy at a discount. The first 2 bags of adult 80/20 were working well after transitioning. The second 2 bags were the old formula, 70/30 and expire this month. I thought I should mix since I still had almost a full bag of 80/20. Within a day or two, both dogs had the runs, bad, and one vomited a time or two.
My questions are: the 80/20 to 70/30 switch should not have been that big a deal, right? Same food, slightly different percentage. 2. The 70/30 bags were not vacuum tight, and expire this month. Is it possible it spoiled? I'm going to contact our source but wanted to get some input first. Thanks. |

Were the 70/30 bags sealed airtight kind of like a balloon or a bag of potato chips? I know that some companies will either vaccuum seal a bag or use an inert gas like nitrogen depending on where they are being shipped. Last edited by sable123; 11-15-2011 at 12:02 PM. |

Was it the same formula? Meaning adult, puppy, large breed puppy etc?
If not, say one was adult regular and one was red meat, then I could definitely see some runny poops maybe some vomiting from stomach upset, but its not usually a symptom even in this case. If it was the same formula I don't think it would have caused such a severe reaction if it was just the ratios that differed- if it was not vacuum sealed (they usually are right? From what I remember) then I could see it being spoiled... |

The 80/20 was vacuum sealed, and the 70/30 was not. They are the same formula, and Orijen always vacuum seals their bags. I couldn't find any punctures or reason to believe the vacuum would have been lost.
The runs had some mucus in them. I thought even though the same formula, I would mix 50/50 to ease the transition. I feel like I've done everything I could to insure a smooth transition so at this point I'm thinking it has to be the 70/30 that's the problem. |
