My lab tried that, still does occasionally. Woolf will eat anything... literally lol
Time to play tough love. Make sure water is available. Schedule your meal times, mine is at 7 am and 7 pm. With the training treats in between those times, they don't get starving hungry. Place the food, after a set time remove it. I usually give 15 minutes or if they walk away. Same routine the next meal. Shadow will give those sad puppy dog eyes wanting food, but has to wait till the next meal time. Even at 17 months, Shadow has a tendency to gain weight so I am not about to play the table scrap game with her. She'll go several days like this till she decides she prefers eating rather then being hungry. So far, she hasn't starved

I personally don't have a problem feeding "extras".
Kibble it's self isn't healthy enough IMO for a dog to THRIVE. Things like green tripe/raw meats, cottage cheese, canned pumpkin, plain yogurt, ect are healthy extras. Even canned food is less processed therefore better than plain kibble. But I wouldn't feed JUST table scraps. Find something that is easy to coat the kibble in and then feed that. Canned food is good, just get a cheap smelly brand (Thankfully the bad kibble brands actually DO have good canned foods because they have more regulations due to the fact poor people eat canned cat/dog food) and add a little water to the kibble along with a tablespoon or two of canned food and coat the kibble all over. You can even let it sit for a couple minutes so the flavor starts soaking into the kibble bits. But if it's THAT big of an issue to add something or the dog wont touch kibble at all, then I'd agree with Twyla. You need to give tough love. Though on the note of not eating kibble at all, what are the dogs teeth like? If they've got build up on them I recommend taking him to a vet and getting a dental cleaning done. He could have painful teeth resulting in him only wanting to eat softer foods which table scraps tend to be. |

Rouli:
Why not try mixing the table scraps in the your dog's kibble and some warm water? If he or she accepts this, gradually reduce the amount of table scraps. What kibble are your feeding?

I agree with putting it down for fifteen minutes and then picking it up and nothing until the next meal time. I would cut out table scraps completely for a few months and then only give scraps irregularly.
A perfectly healthy dog will not starve himself to death. I would not coat the food or add canned food. I think that encourages them to be picky. My parents give cujo leftovers and gravy with every meal. They want him to eat his pills and he will eventually. They will move the bowl out of the kitchen to whatever room they are in to try to encourage him to eat. He is awful. His sisters and nieces eat their unadorned kibble (same food) so fast that by the time I put the bowl down for the last girl everyone else is done. I have to slow their butts down.
