Default Thought I could never bring myself to feed raw.

Always thought "don't fix it if it ain't broke". My border collie is 15 years old and, except for her hips, in excellent health. My three house cats, littermates, are 20-years old. All have been fed Science Diet since birth. So why change what works so well, right?

It was the pet food recalls that started changing my mind. It was looking at my barn cat's teeth (he eats raw mice every day) that convinced me. I know how important healthy teeth are and how difficult it is to keep dog's teeth really clean.

Today, I took the first step. Couldn't make myself give the pup a slimy chicken quarter inside the house so we went outside. Temp took the chicken, pranced around holding it for a while, threw it in the air and caught it a couple times, and then ran into the pasture and buried it. Not the best way to start.

Later I gave him another quarter in his crate. That one he crunched and cracked and ate. Then I watched him for an hour waiting for the internal bleeding to start. Amazingly, he is still alive. That first time hearing your dog crack those chicken bones is really hard. We have all been told all our lives to never, ever feed chicken bones.

We aren't going cold turkey. Half kibble and half raw for a while. My mind is having difficulty accepting this new way of thinking.

You can do it! I personally like to feed chicken frames.
