Question SIBO- What food do you use?

Just trying to see what works for everyone. While Zira is eating better and has gained weight, I'm hoping to take that one step further and have her eating like normal.... I also want to make sure she's on something that will help promote good digestion in the future too. She's on Science Diet large breed puppy Lamb and Rice formula (wet and dry mixed). The bag says for her size and age, she should eat 4 1/2-5 1/4 cups a day. She will eat anywhere from 3-4 cups of dry with 3-4 table spoons of the wet... most days she eats all, if not most.

Before the vet told us to switch, we had her on Orijen large puppy, then Taste Of The Wild Highlands formula (I believe that's the one? It was the buffalo and venison). Although they are great, and I really wanted to have my dogs on those..... she just couldn't handle it. So, now we are on the normal food track. Science Diet has definitely showed some improvement with her... but, just trying to think of something that may be even better for her, and better for her system... Maybe to also help cut down on the constant bowel movements.

*So... for all who have SIBO dogs... What do you feed them? What works well for your dog(s)?

*Also, she is almost 9 Months old.... is it OK to have her on supplements (for digestive health/shedding)? I only see supplements here at our stores for adults... is this too early for those? She is already on Probiotics... but it's costing me an arm and a leg to keep her on the prescription one (Forti-Flora, I believe it's called), Is it OK to switch her to the chewable or liquid one for Adults (again, stores only carry the adult ones)?

*Anyone have anything else that works well for their dogs?

She is currently on Probiotics, and Pumpkin... and I also may start her back for another round on Ensure to supplement her not eating as much as she should.

I think dogs can do OK on the "cheaper" type foods...it all depends on what gets along with their particular system.

I had tried Wellness, Innova, then the vet had me try IAMs low residue which my dog did well on. I'm currently trying to move her over to the Proplan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Seems like quite a few ppl on the forum recommended it so I'll give it a shot.

I agree. I always liked the holistic food brands... but, if her stomach can't handle it, I'm obviously going to feed her what she'll actually eat and do well on! I've heard a lot of people recommend IAMs low residue, I wonder how well she'd do on that. I'm not too familiar with Proplan though. But, that's what she needs, something to help her digestive system and her skin.... she's itchy often, and has no fleas (I check... a lot, kind of OCD with that. lol). I'm just not sure if the Science Diet Lamb and Rice is going to help her as much as she needs it to.... even with her doing well on it. I'm really considering switching her once this bag gets low.

Those 2 will have to go on my list, I'll look them up. Thanks =)

Pro Plan SS and Purina ONE SS are godsends to dogs with troubled insides and they are not prescription foods. These are rich, high quality diets, they just work plain and simple.

If she is doing OK on the current one, you may want to just try the PP SS instead of the IAMs route. I went the IAMs route since my dog kept having solid stool for 1 week, followed by 1-2 days of liquid stool, then back to normal. Cycle continued for months as I tried to figure out what was causing it. All tests were negative so the vet finally convinced me to try the low-residue (if anything to settle her stomach). She's had solid stool for about 3-4 weeks now so it's probably the food. I'm currently SLOWLY trying to transition her off the vet formula and onto the Proplan. Probably will do it over 2 weeks and see how she does on it. Remember protein sources can also be the issue. They say fish formulas seem to be more gentle? The Proplan SS is salmon based. If you do a search for the food on the forum, you can see what others have said as well.

My personal goal is if she does well on the Proplan, then I'll try to go to higher grades/brands of the fish formulas...but we'll see.

Also, for SIBO, people seem to say Tylan powder does wonders. At 9 months, I would probably try to see if the food alone can do the trick though.

Yeah, I looked into both the PP SS and the Purina One SS, both seem to pin point her issues, and might work well. Both are also cheaper then what I pay now for Science Diet, and both are at our local store.... So, guess it's worth a try.

I've been trying to get her normal without Tylan powder.... and so far, we HAVE taken steps forward. She is not skin and bones anymore... she's not where I want her to be, but she's definitely better. Her stools are no longer complete liquid, and she doesn't go AS often. BUT, she still goes way more then she should, and she is still having soft stool... it's not completely normal. So I am probably going to give one more try to just using food (switching it again), and just keep up with probiotics and pumpkin.... see where that goes for a little bit. If nothing makes a dramatic change, then I will be putting her on Tylan. I'm glad she's getting better.... but, if there is something even better that I can do for her that will work even quicker... I will jump on that option.

Last time I weighed her (2 weeks ago?) She was 54lbs... which, I believe she may have gained a little more since then... so maybe around 58lbs now, give or take some. Still not where I want her, but... at least it's getting better.

SIBO is so stressful....

When Kel was diagnosed with SIBO my vet put him on EUKANUBA LOW-DENSITY food (I believe it's made by IAMS now). He also took a 30 day course of tetracycline. He had to follow this protocol twice ... the first time he was weaned back to a normal diet too fast, the second time he again took a 30 day course of tetracycline and was on the Low-Density food for about 18 months and was weaned back to a normal diet successfully. After the second time he continued eating a normal diet until the day he died.

Jazz had chronic SIBO so we did the 1 month of Tylan powder and switched him to Purina Pro Plan SS and no problems since.

Good to hear some good results with SIBO... I've been going through digestive problems with Zira since we got her at 3.5 months. Now she's almost 9 months. Wasn't until about 2 months ago or so that we figured out it was SIBO. I just need to find the perfect food for her, and maybe a month or a bit more of the Tylan powder..... I think she'll be fine after that. She's already getting slightly better on what I have her on now.

I think Pro Plan SS is what I'll be looking into. Have to see if I can get a small bag to test with her soon, see if she likes it.
