So everyone has probably already been here but just in case, here's a great website for analyzing what fido is eating!

Really not a big fan of that website. Most of the reviews are several years old and have faulty information (example: saying a food uses Menadione when it hasn't used that ingredient in years). Also, the website is in my opinion heavily biased in favor of grain-free foods, ranking grain-free foods with high potato content more favorably than grain-inclusive foods with higher meat content.

When I read this:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/about.html It tells me enough to know to stay away. Ingredient scanning isn't going to tell you how your dog is going to respond to the food. While many will "hate" the pet food industry because of various reasons, I can certainly see how nutritionist formulated foods have helped so many dogs when feeding manufactured foods. My sisters for example were loose stool pups. They were on Iams Low Residue (vet formula) for years. She would never try anything else because her dogs would just poo everywhere on other supposed higher quality foods. After she was pregnant again, she knew she needed to pinch some pennies IF she could. So she tried one more time....she fed Purina ONE because it had similar BUT NOT exact ingredients. Regardless...she found a food that worked and helped her budget. Plus I think putting stars on food is just another way for people to "feel better" or have a badge of honor that they feed a 5 or 6 star food. I'm just glad my dogs are healthy...that is enough of a badge of honor for me. I'll wear that LOUD and PROUD on my shirt. Doesn't mean I will not try different brands over time to see how they do, but it will NOT be based on these type of websites. Plus, I feel just fine and feel good about feeding my pups knowing they are not going without. |

I agree with the agenda of educating dog food buyers in how to select good food, but unfortunately dogfoodanalysis and dogfoodadvisor have the same problems-- outdated information, an obvious bias of grain-free over grain-inclusive, even when comparing mediocre grain-free foods against really good grain-inclusive foods, and they don't take into account WHERE the ingredients come from. Is the corn/rice imported from China or is it domestic? Is the company a huge conglomerate that's been involved in multiple recalls, or is the company a small, community-conscious entity that's never been involved in a recall and is committed to excellence?

Dogfoodadvisor.com is a joke. The same old story. Some guy with a poorly bred dog gets sick and it is the petfood industry's fault. He probably neutered the dog to young and pumped it with useless vaccines every year. He is a dentist who has never used the hundreds of foods on the website. He has never even seen the foods. He says he is an "expert label reader" but he is often totally wrong.
He also does not recognized the expertise of the companies. In the case of Loyall, he totally disregards a statement from the company that its by-product meal does not contains heads and feet, just skin, meat and organs. He considers beet pulp "controversial". According to who? Last edited by sable123; 09-11-2011 at 12:24 AM. |
