Ok, I'm going to try and make this as short as possible....
We started obedience very early. He was in a class with two German short haired pointers, they were like gladiators with each other playing. When we would enter the training center the barking of the dogs that were kenneled would freak him out. Any large dog in the lobby would freak him out. When the two gladiators were playing after class he sat behind me, whined and watched.
He graduated puppy class last night and will be 15 weeks tomorrow. We met a Standard Poodle on the way in, no problem. He actually started barking at the gladiators and joined in, chasing them around the class room barking. He was still a little leary of joining in the wrestling match but he was approaching them in class vs. the opposite in previous classes.
My point is, we acted like it was nothing to fear and he finally came out of that fear period and acts like a different dog. We didn't force him, we just ignored the behavior and let him approach on his own. He came around.
Milage of this may vary but I say don't coddle him, don't show signs it troubles you and he should come around.
