Mouthy at 6mos..

I just spayed my female gsd. She just turned 6mos. Had her since 2mos. She is still using her mouth on my hand when she doesn't want me to do anything. Not that I stop doing what I was doing. I've tried the loud No, holding her lips around her teeth, using my thumb on her bottom jaw, trying to get her to stop and show her I'm not afraid of her mouth. Any suggestions? We also have periodic challenges with her front paws. I've raised and trained collies but she is 65pounds and seems to have domineering tendendcies..

She's just a shepherd. Have you tried trading your hand for a toy and praising her chewing the toy?

Then just keep with it. It stops around 8-10 months

Hmmm, it only got better for me when I taught my girls how to play in a way that didn't hurt my delicate skin. Since I started when they hit my house at 2 - 3 months, I'd say they were much better by 10 months. But only because of what I was doing, not cause they just changed on their own.

Have you seen all the hints/tips/suggestions ---> http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...tips-help.html

"when your dog isn't doing what you want you to
stop and ask yourself what am i doing wrong"?
i read that somewhere.

doggiedad, you are so right. I know it's something I'm doing to make her challange me.. she's so smart.

My female mouthed for a couple weeks and was done at about 3.5 months. My male was mouthy when I got him from the shelter, he was about 8 months. It took about a week for him to stop. I used redirection for both.

Assuming you've been teaching bite inhibition all along, her age, and whether this is more of a "I don't want to do that" nip to get her way, I would use a correction personally and not just redirect. A sharp "no" and a time out. Every time.

I never said it would change on its own. If you read my first comment I told him to redirect.
