Default Sleep needed for pups

What would be the amount of sleep that a 5.5 month male pup would need per day.. A trainer I use says 16-20 hours a day and usually more sleep than they get on their own. I often feel bad if pup is in crate for a bit. but if they need many hours of sleep what is the harm? So how many hours per day do we think is the correct amount?

It depends on the puppy, its energy and drives. Low and medium drive puppies are going to sleep more then high drive pups and/or pups with high energy. For intance... My Gala, from the day I got her she would not lay down for a split second (I'm not joking). If I wanted her to take a nap, I would have to put her in a crate. Other pups will just lay down and take a nap on their own. Leave it to the puppy, unless of course you have a "Gala" and you need to put him in a crate once in a while to give YOU a brake!

Mine is almost 5 months - he sleeps in his crate from 9pm-6am. He takes a nap around 10am for an hour or so and then around 7pm he gets really lazy, not really sleeping though, just a lot of laying around.

dogs and pups sleep all of the time. i wouldn't
leave a pup or a dog in a crate longer than
3 or 4 hours. i'm sure they can go longer
but i like my dog being comfortable. when
my dog was crated my neighbor came in
every 3 to 4 hours to let him, give him a snack,
stay with him for a hour (sometimes).

My 12 week old puppy sleeps 90% of the time he is in the house and he lives in the house. Sleeps from 11pm to 7am in the morning. When I watch TV or spend hours on the computer he sleeps right at my feet almost always.....really nice pet dog. I love it and think you have to allow that each puppy is different and have different metabolisms.
