Default Parvo Questions

I realize the importance of socialization during the first two years of life, but I am concerned about Parvo. How can you avoid getting it when you have other family dogs pooping in the same area, obedience classes, and we have livestock anc chickens to boot. I have read it can be deadly to a new pup.

If your dog has finished its puppy vaccination series, it is presumed to be immune to parvo.

My vet recommends that young pups not walk on the floor of the vet's office, pet stores, etc until two weeks after the last vaccination. Having said that, dogs have gotten parvo even after vaccination. The best you can do is be aware and as careful as you can without sacrificing socialization and training. I took my pups to puppy class when they were about 12 wks although they accept pups at 8 wks of age. I figured that since it was an obedience training club the majority of the owners would be responsible and the risk somewhat less than other places.

Keep in mind that even if a hypothetical person never took their dog outdoors, THEY still go outdoors.

You bring home germs on your shoes, your clothes, on you. You mitigate your risks, and accept in the end that life is inherently dangerous and always fatal.
