A nice tribute. The good news is the dad of the two little girls was not injured or killed in the attack. The dog did his job. And as awful as it is, it is still better that the dog took the brunt of the attack.
A few weeks ago someone was putting up a stink on facebook about a cop that killed a guy wielding a knife. Knifes are very dangerous. They are lethal weapons.
A person's life is worth more than a dog's, even a police dog. That's why they send the dog. The dog is NOT a lethal weapon. If they can neutralize the threat with a dog, then, maybe someone does not have to die today. And even crazy people, and criminals are people.
This time, the dog got killed, and that is terribly sad, such a young dog. But it is what k9 officers have to accept every day that they work with their dog. Their dog may be sent in to a situation where they may die. Maybe the alternative is to send in the guy with two babies to try to neutralize a threat without loss of life.
I hope the guy gets another dog. The sacrifice the guys make is in bonding with a critter that they will then place in danger, and sometimes have to bear the consequences of that. But you still have to put all that into the dog, the time, the training, the piece of yourself. I expect they would most of them say that it is worth it.
