‘World’s most famous wolf’ shot and killed outside Yellowstone

Just thought i'd share...

A wolf so popular that she was referred to as a rock star by rangers was shot and killed in Wyoming just outside Yellowstone National Park late last week, wildlife officials told the New York Times.

I know this is a dog site, and I should feel all sad about losing this wolf. She was pretty. She was also six years old. 98 in 10 packs in that area alone. That's a lot of wolves. The reason they roam outside of the park is because they need to find game. They will kill each other, and starve if there are too many, or they will go after wildlife.

It is sad, but I really don't have a problem with it. Unless people are making her tame, there is really nothing wrong with the scenario. I would rather have some wolves shot and killed, then a lot of wolves starving and raiding livestock.

I didn't realize they had legalized wolf hunts in Wyoming, outside of Yellowstone.

The article doesn't say anything about this particular wolf (or any particular wolves) preying on livestock in the area, so it is really sad that this Yellowstone wolf stepped out of bounds and got killed for it.

I can't blame ranchers for wanting to protect their livestock, but pre-emptive killing rubs me the wrong way.

I don't think it has to be either/or. I believe other countries have figured out better ways of management and use things like Livestock Guardian Dogs. And I am sure other countries do a worse job! I just don't know...it seems like we are smarter but my guess is follow the money...

Read this the order day and thought it was heartbreaking. I'm not attacking hunters per say but just feel some people are just too trigger happy. For example the story that came out several months ago about a hunter who mistook another hunter for a bear and shot and killed the man - I don't know but if you can't tell if you are aiming at a man or a bear then don't shoot! for christ's sakes a pelt or trophy is not worth another person's life

Alot of different views on this topic...can certainly see POV on both sides.

But at the end of the day... for me this is a beatiful & majestic creature that was shot and killed...it does make me sad.
