Default Commission for artist who shot dog so he could to film it

Animals Petition: Stop Tom Otterness Project at the Memorial Art Gallery | Change.org

This 'artist' adopted a dog from a local shelter, brought it home, tied it to a fence and shot it so he could film it as 'art'. The dog did not die instantly.

Now a local art gallery wants to commission the artist to create a sculpture.

I am speechless.

I'll admit I'm not the most cultured of person, but that's not art by any definition. That's just sick. Poor dog finally gets out, thinks there's someone to love him, and then gets that. Sick.

His actions are reprehensible, and I would support any opposition to hiring him for anything (other than cleaning kennel cages with a toothbrush) in the future.

HOWEVER, this dog incident occurred over a quarter of a century ago, apparently:

I just can't comprehend how someone could do something like that, let alone how he can get any type of recognition as any type of art form, it's just a cruel evil act.

That's horrible. I can't imagine how devastated the shelter must have felt as well.

Otterness’ past has been a subject of controversy for many years, but due to continued protests from organizations like In Defense of Animals and PETA, he has encountered particular difficulty throughout 2011. Earlier this year, he lost a $750,000 commission for a sculpture at the New York Public Library’s Battery Park Branch following protests from animal rights groups and community members. Last month, Otterness had two lucrative projects in San Francisco cancelled, including a $750,000 commission for a sculpture in the city’s Central Subway, which was personally halted by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.
I do NOT think it was right to do what he did in any way, but that was 40 years ago... and he has paid for his mistake by losing those contracts. I think he needs to donate a good percentage of what he's about to earn on this MAG project to some kind of animal charity.

I think he should continue to suffer, if I beat him over the head repeatedly with a shovel maybe someone can make a sculpture of his grimacing face, I'll donate the sculpture to an Animal Shelter.

Okay so it was 30 years ago. So?? He can be forgiven when he puts his money where is mouth is or starts showing by his ACTIONS that he is sorry. Start volunteering for shelters or rescues. Start donating to the same. Show that you are sorry. I don't want to hear the words, I want to see by someone's actions that they have changed. Like Michael Vick, he can spout off at the mouth for as long as he wants- the next 50 years, I don't care- about how sorry he is, how he made a mistake, how he was misguided, didn't know any better, blah, blah blah. Until I see that he is actually WORKING to show he cares and that he is sorry his words don't mean jack.

Until that time, I hope he loses every commission, every job that comes along.
