$42k out of over 100M budget, over 200M in assets, and 32M invested in hedge funds?

Someone ought to sue them for false advertising.

Oh, but that would be cruel and inhumane, because they "help animals."

Haven't you seen those tear-jerker commercials??? What will all the poor, poor shelter dogs do without HSUS?

Nothing different you say???? What???

Hmm...maybe you're right :S.

This has been going on for many years and yet people still give to the HSUS vrs. their local shelters or to the American Humane Association which does help animals and children.

I am always running into people who still think by giving money to the HSUS that funds are then paid down to their local humane societies.

Do You Know ... That Humane Societies Are Not One Organization

Quote: When you give to a national (or international) Humane Society you are not giving to your local Humane Society. There is no copyright on the usage of the name *Humane Society*. Any organization can put HS onto their name and in fact around the U.S. there are kill and even high-kill shelters that use HS as part of their name.

Before becoming a member or donor of any HS you need to do your research and know just where your dollars and loyalty are going. Is the organization in keeping with your beliefs? Is the organization spending most of the money to fulfill its stated mission or are they paying huge saleries, spend large chunks for glittzy or pull-at-the-heartstring campaigns, or budgeting for activities that are not so noticable and possibly against your beliefs.

Is it true that the IRS is investigating HSUS?

You should also look into how much (what percent of your donation) Red Cross money goes to the needy.
All they get from me is blood.

I gave them five gallons. I think that should cover me for any surgeries I might ever need. I never got a nickel from them, but I will pay through the nose if I ever need blood. But whatever. I would rather give it than get it. But I have been on strike for a few years.

Add AARP to the 'do not frequent' list too. All of the orgs (alleged non-profits) are not there to help. They are PACs (political action committees), i.e. lobbies. I worked for AARP for a long time, and boy could I tell stories. Bottom line: get your discounts from AAA.

Offtopic: AAA is amazing. Seconded!

You also gotta wonder how much money is going in a circle. I.E. Those tear-jerker commercials cost a lot of money to air on the big three-letter networks. Are you donating money to buy more ad space and make more commercials that ask for more money? When does the money actually DO SOMETHING?

But not all PAC/Lobbyists are inherently bad, you just need to know where your money is going. I donate to one organization (non-animal) that is a heavy lobbying organization because I want them to represent those rights on Capitol Hill.
