I find it very disheartening but I think education is what is needed. If more people knew about the horrors of mills, and more people made the choice to just walk away from that 'puppy in the window' I think fewer mills would be able to support themselves off the sales of their animals.

I think in many situations the heart wins over the mind. It takes thought, and research to find a good breeder. Then patience to wait for the right puppy to come along -- all the while you don't get the visual of the cute puppy with the tail that won't stop wagging. When people venture into pet stores that sell puppies, it just takes a second for the heart to convince them they need this adorable little ball of fluff and then when the mind does get involved, for some people, it starts to rationalize the situation -- "Well, if I don't 'save' him who will?" or "He's alive, he needs a home now too!"

The pet stores around me and within an hour drive of where I live sell puppies like hot cakes every week it seems like they have new ones in. Weekends are the worse to go into these stores because often times I'll see families standing around playing with the puppies and making rash decisions to purchase them for their kids

Anyway, just thought I'd share. I'm sure the people here are already aware of all of this. Perhaps instead of airing that show on HBO2 they should air it on the basic cable channels Make it an ABC special!

also, the pet stores are well away of the "puppy mill" stigma. So, if you ask, they will gush on and on about the loving breeder that provided that pup and rant with you about the horrors of puppy mills.

Some people just want to believe it, so they buy anyway.
