Unhappy Dog Theft Up 32% This Year

"Hold on tight to your precious pooches. Dog theft is up, says the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The organization's national database shows at least a 32 percent jump in thefts this year. The Chicago Sun Times writes that the numbers come from media reports of stolen dogs and customers who phone AKC's Companion Animal Recovery service.

So far, 224 pets have been reported stolen in 2011, compared to the 150 stolen during the same period of seven months in 2010. Newsmax.com points out this is a major increase from the 162 thefts reported in total during 2009."

Theft is so simple to prevent yet I always see dogs tied up outside of stores in downtown Toronto.

When I was young, back in the days when we did not lock our doors, I took the family's Irish Setter with me to the store to buy milk and bread. Tied him outside, he was a young dog, and when I came out I saw this man trying to untie him. I was pretty vocal as a kid so I yelled at this guy and he ran off. That was 40 or more years ago. It's worse now. Never left a dog tied up outside a store again.

I could not imagine the pain of having a pet stolen, especially knowing it would be my fault.

I wonder if they have stats on the breeds of dogs being stolen, and if there is any trend or if the thieves are indiscriminate. It's really sad - they're stealing a member of your family.
