We were in Destin, FL, a couple of years ago and early in the morning a man came down the beach with a beautiful young dog, either weimaraner or lab, don't recall. Pup was all excited, running ahead, very friendly and playful. They moved on down the beach a bit, and an hour later or so there was some commotion. The dog had swum far out, everyone lost sight of it, and the man was frantically calling for it. No dog. He dejectedly made his way back up the beach, and we were heartbroken to see his and his kids' concern.

About an hour later we learned that the dog had swam back in like nothing had happened. Not sure how long the dog was out there, but we sure were glad the story had a happy ending.

Gosh... that's a swim! Your title reminded me of something that happened this past weekend. We took the puppy and our schnauzer to the beach for a little socialization and play. When we were getting out of the car this little grumpy looking lady came up and asked me if dogs are allowed at the beach, I said of course they are. Then with her nose as high as possible asked me if they were allowed in the water, and I told her yes. She went to her husband and started having a fit about the dogs. All I could do was laugh.... dogs in the ocean water are the LEAST of your concerns!!

Totally off topic but where in Destin was this? I've heard it's a very dog friendly town and it's just right up the road from me... I would love to take Rodeo out to a nicer beach than the Pensacola dog beach.

I once heard a story about a terrier that liked to jump of the dock. So his owner would take him down there every day. Well one day he noticed his dog swiming out the of the other side of the dock with a shark tailing him. The man jumped on top of the shark and saved his terrier. They both sustained minor injuries but were all right. I personally wouldn't let my dog swim unless the were on leash.

Rodeo--It was actually in Seaside--I said Destin bc more people would know where that was. We go to Seaside every year (with half of Houston, it seems!). However, I'm not sure that dogs are permitted on the beach, as I rarely have seen any others.

On a related note, maybe you can return some info to me: Is there a good kennel in the Destin/Seaside area? This year we wanted to bring our pup, couldn't keep her in the condo, so we thought we might put her in kennel but take her out daily for fun with the family. We couldn't find any place to keep her that looked reputable. Suggestions?
