The dogs weren't up to date on their rabies vaccines either... smart move by the owner.

probbably(hopefully) some residual rabies antibodies in their systems I bet they will be fine, sucks to be quarantined for 6 months though, and people wonder why i trap and shoot opossums, raccoons and rabbits in my back yard. In the country there is a lot of predation, in the burbs we have animal control chasing off stray cats and coyotes so we get too many wild pest animals.

Yeah but that state requires annual vacs while most states now allow 3 years. I use to get aggrevated when FL had some 3 year and some 1 year counties. The county that I lived in was 1 year while the county where our vet was located was a 3 year county. And yes, they were the same vaccine batch out of the same box.

Ditto!!! This was true for Marion County too. I live in Marion (1 year) and my vet is in Alachua County (3 year). I was so glad when Marion finally went to 3 years.

We had a rabies scare here a couple of years ago, resulting in this big rush by panicked owners to get their beasties vaccinated. A couple of vets were copping attitude; they'd post rules about when they would give rabies shots. or haughty signs saying they would not give rabies vaccinations only etc. My favorite vet had a different point of view. He told me once "Hey, it's made Christmas." I like that guy.

Raccoons are the largest threat of rabies here in FL. Many of those dead alongside of the road if tested (one test showed 50%) of mature raccoons hit on FL highways had the virus. The virus will make some animals move slow thus more likely to be hit.

If a raccoon wanders into a subdivision or elsewhere there are a lot of people and shows no fear then the red flags should really start waving.

We had a drive through clinic at the fairgrounds here in my county several years ago. I believe there were 3 lines of cars and vet and helper would give vac to the animals right in the car. Next car would pull up and those animals were vaccinated. There were staff going down the lines of cars having owners complete paperwork while they were waiting.

We also have shot clinics set up at various locations throughout the year. You stand in line and complete a form and checkoff 1 year vac. or 3 year vac. and give form and money when you approach a table. Less expensive then going to a vet and a good way to get animals vacinated who otherwise would not get one.

I'm a big believer in rabies vac. but don't think they need to be given as often (for coverage) as required by law.

wish i could find a place like that here! The rabies vaccine is the biggest one i worry about. beyond that i'm not real concerned with the other vaccines if they're not needed i try to avoid them.
