Sorry, I can usually understand most verdicts, but... WHAT THE *#*#?

He killed, what 5 dogs? And it doesn't count as murder because they were unconscious? DUH they were unconscious, he hit them with a freakin' hammer. But he gets charged with the one that lives?

This is stupid, clearly the judge isn't a real animal lover...

No, if you kill your animal it is not murder. You can euthanize a dog, you cannot euthanize a person, at least not in the US.

I think he should be nailed for cruelty on all counts as he could not possibly prove that the dead animals did not suffer as one of his dogs lived.

I do not know whether a carpenter's hammer is any bigger or more utilitarian as a regular hammer. The idea of using a hammer to kill something sounds awful, but if you knew exactly where to strike, then I suppose you could kill something as quickly as with drugs.

One of the accepted ways of killing beef cattle is to strike them with a sledge hammer.

If you shot something, drugged something, hit something with the intention of killing it, it is not necessarily cruelty. I think that cruelty should be reserved for those people who do things like set an animal on fire or cut of their paws, people who revel in watching the animal suffer and die.

I think the Ohio law reads that you must euthanize a dog in such a way as to provide a drug that will cause the animal to go to sleep and then die. However, this does not hold true for "humane" societies who can stab or gas animals, they used to electrocute them.

In Henrico County where I live, you are not allowed to destroy your own dog

--When Barton testified in November he described the day he killed his dogs as "the worst day of my life, when I had to do that to my babies."

Had to? Huh?

Sometimes I just can't help but chime in.

It seems selzer is the only person to respond with logic and wisdom.

Whenever a judge is involved and you people only read a snippet, you have to go with the judge. You can't immediately claim the judge an animal-hater, a moron, unthinking.
The case went to court. Come on, justice in that city was served. The authority has passed judgement and that is that.

I have and will again, if necessary, killed my pets. I will not let one suffer with prolonged pain.
We can disagree with the method this guy used, but the judge likely did his job according to the law.
