Our family lost our wonderful GS to seizures earlier this year. We are now starting the very intense research process of breeders in Ontario. I have been trolling through 100's of posts on this site and feel quite overwhelmed with information! We are mostly looking for a companion/pet/farm suitable dog. We have a horse farm and spend a lot of time outside. I am looking for a dog that has the ability to remain healthy/sound with a moderately active family. We are not looking for a super high energy dog, however the dog will be active. Ideally, we are looking for a pup that can be introduced early in life to our horses, chickens and cats however we will also look at young dogs up to 2 years old. So after all my reading I am expecting that some members will suggest I look at the shelters... I have and do continue to look in those places. I also half expect not to get a single recommendation but if I don't ask that's not going to help either! We are located in Durham Region but will travel within reason... lets say 4 hours. I am looking for recommendations of breeders that may have a breeding program to produce a dog to suit our family needs. Please send recommendations for breeders that you personally have experience with their dogs.
I am also in Ontario . I do have a breeder recommendation for you . Wendelin Farm , they are just inside Quebec and about a 5 hr drive. They most likely would have a pup at some point that may fit what you would like. They do have many "high drive dogs" , more than you would want/need but I bet they could chat with you about having a dog that may fit. They do occasionally have older dogs and they run a Dairy farm so these dogs are all raised in a farm environment with kids , animals , livestock etc...
Hi There,
I have to agree. I have a Wendelin pup ...a young 25 mo old male and he is the best dog ever. Excellent work ethic, on/off switch and just super at everything he does. Christina and Lucas are as honest as they come. Their pups are professionally tested, parents DM tested with great stock.* They have several litters on the ground now and two amazing litters just on the ground this week with two more behind that. Feel free to email if you would like further info* I know several people who have their dogs. Great environment...can't say enough good things about them!
I have a 17 month old Wendelin male. He is scary smart and a bit of a looker too! I would surely ask you to check out her kennel and breeding program she has a deep bench. Good luck!
We are in North Durham on the border of Kawartha Lakes actually!
I looked at the Wendelin web and spoke with someone who has a Wondrous dog that is very high drive but I can contact them and see what they have.
Also, GSDofOntario, Just a note. Christina of Wendelin Farm has several litters on the ground by her new stunning import male Ibon Jipo Me...he has a beautiful on/off switch so you might like to look at some of those pups. The Dam of my boy (Fiona) is due shortly by him and the Sire to RZZNSTR's pup (Cert) also has pups on the ground now....just be sure to let her know what the pup is intended for so she can match the pup to you. She also has older ones available and is also the type of good person who would try to refer if you do not find what you are looking for with her. Plus they are a working farm and her daughter has horses so just what you wanted your pup to be acclimated to. My pup (Ikele von Wendelin) was imprinted very well by their family/farm life. Everyone I have ever referred has been super happy with their pup. Best of luck!
I am new to this forum, but your almost year old thread contains very similar details to what I am looking for. I live just East of Toronto and I am looking for recommendations for reputable GSD breeders in Canada (probably willing to drive within 5 hours of Toronto). We lost our 11 year old GSD suddenly in November (the vet thought it was probably heart failure). We have not yet decided on a puppy or a rescue, but my family has had GSDs for over 40 years (mostly rescues, only two were puppies from breeders).
Our dogs are just "family" dogs. We have no interest in breeding, showing or working them. Although most of our shepherds have been black and tan, we don't really care about what they look like. It has always been about the personality. Perhaps we are "lazy" GSD owners, but they do not need to exhibit model behaviour or be highly trained.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
