Default Central Florida German Shepherds in Lakeview, FL

Hello,

I'm a new member to this site and am preparing to purchase my first own puppy within two months. I'm considering the above mentioned breeder as my choice; does anyone know about them?

Thank you

Brian

Brian I don't know this breeder so I can't say anything good or bad, so just some general tips - make sure the breeder is doing health checks on the dams and sire for hip dysplasia through the OFA and better yet elbows and checking for degenerative myelopathy too. It says on the site there is a one year health guarantee but doesn't specify what the breeder does to avoid genetic issues, so ask for that. If he says "my dogs have never had Problems or hip dysplasia so I don't need to check hips" then I'd move on.

It wouldn't hurt to look at other breeders who are doing some work with their dogs, showing and competing in sports.

A member of the board here, Betty with Little River Canine is north of you and an accomplished breeder and can suggest breeders in central/north Florida if she doesn't have puppies available. Also PM a member here, screen name "TrickyShepherd" she lives in central Florida and maybe able to point you to other breeders.

...and the small thumbnail pics of puppies on the page I linked above, they dont have a robust look to them, something seems off to me. It may just be poor pics though but I really think you should look at more dogs with breeders who show and works dogs so you can see the differences and what a spending a little more can get quality wise with a good breeder.

Agreed. They're breeding dogs with sketchy conformation and coloring and the whole website screams "used car salesman." No information on health testing, etc. Things to look for in a 'Responsible' Breeder
Try starting there to learn what to look for.

Hi Brian,

I don't see any pedigrees or any health testing mentioned on the site. Those are two things I would ask about.

A big thing for me is to ask the breeder why that male to that female. Listen carefully to the response. A thought out breeding, and the breeder (any breeder) should be able to delve right into what they are looking to improve, what they are looking to reinforce in the pairing.

My personal preference is also for breeders that have a multi generational breeding program. Are they holding back and using what they produced?

Unless you really want to met the puppy ahead of time don't rule out having a puppy shipped from a breeder out of the area.
