Default Midwest Breeders?

It looks more and more like my family is going to be getting a GSD later this year. We live in Omaha, Nebraska currently. Ideal would be to find a breeder in South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, or Missouri, however I would have no problem driving further for the right dog.

Welcome to the forum!

Before you call anyone up make sure you've spent hours generally on ---> Welcome to the GSD/FAQ's for the first time owner - German Shepherd Dog Forums

and specifically on ---> How to find a puppy! and ---> Link: How to tell a good breeder website from a bad one.

The more a good responsible breeder knows YOU have done your homework, the more likely they will consider you for one of their pups. And the more YOU know the less likely you will get a puppy that grows up with health and temperament issues that will plague you for the life of the dog.

I suppose I should add that we are getting a GSD as more of a family dog, we have a 2 year old currently. I am in the military, so a dog that will have my wifes back in the event that I ever deploy is a must.. I grew up with a Lab who got failed out of her service dog school for a high chance of hip dysplasia, she went on to beat cancer twice and was the last of her litter to die. Neighbors had two male GSDs, was never around them much but admired them from a-far. My wife had Pits growing up mostly.

If she had it her way, we would be getting a Husky or a White German Shepherd, I for one am indifferent as to what color it is as long as it is a good family dog.

I don't have a first-hand recommendation in that area, but you may want to talk to Cynthia Tidmore in Oklahoma. I "know" a few of her dogs (follow them online or know people who have them), though I have never met her or purchased a dog from her. I have talked with her on and off because she is considering doing a breeding using one of my dogs. As far as second-hand contact, she has always been very ethical. If I was looking for a dog in the area, I would check her out.

I have had 3 GSD from Royalair in Grinnell Iowa & LOVE 'em. Sam was over 13 when I had to let her go & was not only long lived but healthy, vigorous, easily trained, terrific personality & rock solid temperament. Phoenix(just shy of 6) & Djibouti (6+yo) are with me now & have never had an unhealthy day. They're sound, active, lovely companions that I'm so grateful to have.

Royalair isn't popular on the board. Most of her dogs are over sized. IF you don't want a larger GSD you want to look elsewhere. IF SchH/IPO titles are important to you then you should look elsewhere. IF not then she's absolutely worth considering.

The vast majority of people who have Royalair GSDs & live with them, actually KNOW them, love them. Many return to Royalair again & again for their 2nd, 3rd & 4th GSD. Personally, that info is more important to me than rumour & speculation from people that don't have any 1st hand experience with the breeder or her dogs.

Wherever you go be certain to make a reasoned decision that is *your* decision & one you'll be happy with for 12, 13 yrs.

What about Illinois? If you are looking for showlines or black/reds there is Robin Huerta, she's wonderful and she produces excellent dogs. Huerta Hof German Shepherds

What about Michigan? If you are looking for working lines or blacks, sables or bicolors there is Kelly from Boeselager Kennels, she is also wonderful. www.boeselagerkennel.com/index.html

I would look at the local or national German Shepherd Club and look through the puppy links provided. We have breeders not to far away one wouldn't know about otherwise. Most else being equal, it's easier to look closer to home.

No matter how you look, you have to find a breeder who's puppy schedules matches yours, pups available. I'd check several out, email & phone calls. You may need a few months or more of lead time.

The healthy pup is then the raw material, the bulk of what a dog becomes is then up to you. The best of luck.
