Looking for breeder(s) in Michigan

Hello!
I am thinking of adding a new GSD to my family over the summer. I have owned several GSDs previously. The breeder I am most familiar with will not have pups avail this summer, any ideas? Looking for solid build and stable temperament. Will be doing tracking, obedience, rally, agility, and therapy dog work. No IPO or Schutzhund, so no high drive. I really love the dark red & black coloring of the East German lines. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Have you looked at the other threads on Michigan breeders? If you search on "Michigan Breeders" you will find several threads on the topic. That should get you started.

Black and Red is the hallmark of West German Show Lines, not East German lines. East German/DDR dogs do occasionally come in black/tan, but not the sort of coloring you are probably picturing and sable, black and bi-color are far more common in those lines. So if black/red is the coloring you prefer you are probably going to be looking at show lines, not DDR lines. As far as temperament and the activities you wish to pursue, a good dog from a good breeder of either bloodline type can work nicely.

I bet if you followed some of these links you could get ideas. I'd also do email & phone calls.

Julie is in Michigan. I love my alta tollhaus puppy. Julie was great to work with as well. Defiantly worth checking out.

I'm not sure what their plans are, but I had a breeder friend that I really trust suggest this kennel to me awhile back:

Royale Shepherds - Home

This was YEARS ago when she mentioned them, but the woman I know is really in to West German dogs and is really passionate about health testing and temperament, so I know she wouldn't suggest someone she didn't trust to produce stable, healthy dogs. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, guys. Yes, I mis-typed East German when I meant West German (old lady typing, sorry!). I did check out Alta-Tollhaus, and I do have a Royale Shepherd at home now (who is wonderful, I would recommend Royale to anyone!). Gail's spring pups look awfully nice, but I might not be ready that early. Haven't heard back yet on a later litter from her.

There are two kinds of dogs: Dogs who are German Shepherds, and dogs who WISH they were German Shepherds....
