Default Looking for a good breeder in Winston-Salem area of NC

I am looking for a responsible breeder in the Winston-Salem NC area. What I'm interested in is a good family companion dog. I have 2 children ages 4 and 7.

Temperament is my main focus and I do understand the GSDs have high drives and tons of energy. Color is not extremely important but I'd be lying if I said it didn't matter. I've always loved Black or Sable GSD's.

Right now I have been talking to a breeder outside of Charlotte. He does not have a website so I can't share the info with you but he has seemed truthful and forthcoming with info.

I'm not looking for a show dog, just a healthy new member of the family.

have you familiarized with the different lines of gsd ? working, american showline and german showline ? how many kennels have you visited? you may have found a really good breeder, but imho, it would be wise to expand your search and make sure you know what you want. educating yourself is key for optimum success.

Thanks for the response. I have contacted 4 breeders and will be visiting the first in approx 2-3 weeks. The other 3 are waiting for litters to be born.

Should I be asking to access the facilities before they have pups?

Sounds like you have been looking thru --> How to find a puppy! and that's great. The more time you can spend there and click/read all the links the better you'll do when you talk to the breeders and see the facilities.

Don't forget to see if you can talk to/email any past puppy owners too. That way you can have questions about the breeders and their dogs from people that have older dogs.

Will do Maggie. I know that GSD's are a big commitment but I think I'm up to it. I know that different breeds have different issues.

I was lucky when I was 15 I really wanted a dog but the folks gave me if you can buy it yourself you can get it. I spent a whole school year and was able to scape up $500 for a golden retriever puppy. He was in my family for 17 years.

I think I lucked out back then and found a great dog for a great price. Now that I'm older I want to do it right this time and really investigate my options.
