Is 5 weeks old ..not right

Just a small question,as the last forum site we were on give us the impression that the founders didnt like the fact that we got our pup at 5 week old. calling the breeder BAD......The dam wasnt coping with her first litter so he had to remove them at four weeks ,we offer to take one ,zola, at 5 week old ,and think we did a good job in place of her mother,,,,I know 8wks is the correct age but was it such a bad thing what we did ??

Its not a bad thing-however they believe that its is best for the puppies to have time with the litter mates-they learn social skills during those weeks-they could remove them from the mother and just keep the litter mates together until 7-8 weeks

If the female wasn't doing her job, than no, someone had to step in and take care of the puppies.

Eta: I just realized you only took one. I would have kept the siblings together until 8.

If mom wasn't caring for them then they did need to be removed and cared for.

The biggest issue is behavior. From 5-8 weeks puppies are usually learning proper manners and behavior from mom/littermates. A lot of pups taken before 8 weeks, for this reason, have behavioral issues. If you had to take them away from the mom, it would have been best to take ALL the pups in the litter until 8 weeks.
Since I'm not a breeder, I can't say if there are any health impacts.

Your pup may have missed out on some learning from other pups, but given the situation, what you did was save that pup. Don't look back, and don't worry.
It's easy to be judgmental, especially if one does not know all the facts. If folks
would only take the time to understand rather than opine with arrogance, it'd be a much nicer world!

Her biting was getting really aggressive towards her litter and when she finally drew blood with one of them , then that was the last straw , for the breeder,Zola was a very aggressive eater when she came to us and by the size of her , i think she must of ate the rest of the litters food ,

She came to us when our two sons were 1yr and 2 yr old ,she is amazing with them both only trouble is my 2yr old likes to drink his juice from a dish on the floor...dont worry we have stopped him doing it now hahaha

This would've worried me more than the age of the puppy. They should not be that aggressive at that age. How is she now? How old is she now?

I brought mine home at 6 weeks...the only difference was that we had to teach him a little bite inhibition (which took less time than most of the problem stories I've read on this forum) and there had to be more frequent potty breaks...6 week old bladder is much smaller than an 8 week old. But we had him housebroken in about a week.

The reason you got ripped was probably due to the fact that in general, breeders that allow their dogs to go before 8 weeks, are "sub-par." And depending on the forum and its members, they might not be so nice about it.

Thanks for that,Zola is 9 month old now and is brillant,great with our kids,eaten aggression corrected in about two weeks,now she waits until told ..a little protective when walking on lead,great with other dogs off lead.call back excellent ...and very very clingy
