Go out and visit breeders, dog shows, trials, SchH clubs, etc and meet dogs from several lines. Then you will know.

I've met about a dozen or so. Most have been SL and I have liked the temperaments of all of them. Although to be honest, most of the WL I have met have been military k9 so it may not be the best example as I can't interact much with them. I don't live in an area that is known for quality breeders. The closest reputable breeders that I have been finding are several states away. So going out and meeting them and their dogs in person before selecting one is almost out of the question. Especially if it is to go out and meet more than one kennel.

It's still good to go out & meet the dogs so you have some 1st hand experience with the various types. It will help you decide what you like best. You can also match up what people say with actual dogs.
Additionally, meeting GSD people can give you invaluable contacts with breeders, including those that are some distance from you. It absolutely can't hurt & it will quite possibly help you to find what you're seeking. IF I went by what I read here I'd never have gotten Sam or Djibouti. Thankfully, I met the breeder & saw the actual dogs, so that I was prepared to come to the right decision for me. Regardless of our differences on lines, types etc I think that's truly what the members here really want to see...a blissful outcome b/e dogs & their humans. |

ND has one breeder that I am aware of and I would never consider purchasing a dog from her. I know there are a couple in the WI/IL area as well as CO. But those are quite some distance. MN has a GSD club, but from what I've seen and heard it is mostly ASL which I am not interested in.
I have met quite a few SL's that I have really loved. One was actually the police k9 for our town for several years before he was retired and later euthanized due to cancer. The wife of the officer was my softball coach and their GSD and golden retriever would frequently sit in our dugout at practices and games. Another was owned by a lady on my paper route and everytime he was outside when I went by, she would stop me and let me throw the ball around for him until I had to keep going. Others I have met more briefly, but still enjoyed the pleasure of meeting them. As for looks, my husband definitely prefers the looks of the SL over the WL. This will also pretty much be his first GSD as I lost my last GSD before we were married. I am thinking that a more moderate drive SL might be a better introduction for him than a WL. |

I'm currently not in the states, but we do have local AKC events occassionally. The only GSD's I have seen there are some ASL dogs that a local lady owns. I have nothing against well-bred ASL dogs, but I haven't been too impressed with hers. I met one guy at the dog park that had a gorgeous WGSL coatie, but I never had the opportunity to ask him any questions as I was on my way out (that dog park is pretty much never used as it is on the outskirts of town and there is a newer one in town). I haven't seen him back since.
I love living in such a rural state, but it certainly has its downfalls sometimes. |
