Hello All
My name is bill and my 12 year old GSD, Rocky, recently died after a great life - she was still in excellent health but developed high grade lymphoma and was gone in about 8 weeks after diagnosing it. Its sad as all you dog lovers undoubtedly know. She was a great dog, from german lines from a man who used to run Schafer Lake Kennels in MI from a sire named Orex: John no longer breeds apparently. I will start looking to get another GSD in a few months and am starting to look for breeders. I'm in SouthEast Minnesota. I am primarily looking for a pet, with a confident, friendly and outgoing personality good with kids and neighbors. I enjoyed frisbee tossing with Rocky and would like to do more agility with our next dog. I liked her working lines and drives (although her prey drive bordered on obsessive I have to admit - laser pointer? she would run for hours!). I don't prefer the american show dog look that is so prevalent the past 20 years but in reality personality, health and temperament are more important to me than appearance. I am looking for a breeder I can drive to meet, see the personality of the adult dogs and one that is breeding responsibly. I have lurked on the forum for a year or so thinking about the inevitable with my older dog. Now writing and would appreciate any leads or positive experiences you have had. Thanks all and thanks for all the information on this site. |

I think I am geographically challenged today. I don't know of any reputable breeders in MN itself. For working lines, I would suggest maybe Gildaf in WI and for German showlines Huerta Hof in IL. If nothing else, they would be a good starting point and they could probably give you other suggestions as well.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Minneapolis/St Paul might be able to help you out more with MN American showline breeders. I am not sure how far you live away from the Cities, but it wouldn't hurt to go check them out on one of their meeting days and meet some of their ASL dogs and see if that is what you are interested in. Have you found a dog yet? If not, I have a 5 year old female GSD, I would like to rehome. The dog you describe sounds like my mine. My girl has long hair and she is absolutely beautiful, spayed and UTD. High energy, she can run all day long... best suited for agility. I also live in SE MN. Let me know if you're interested.
