Default Breeders with older dogs?

Trying to find breeders with older dogs that they are looking to re-home. We live in central Maryland. Does anyone know of any breeders near by? Just trying to put some feelers out there.

Thanks!

What is your definition of "older"? Male, female? What are you looking for specifically?

Hello from another Marylander. What age exactly are you looking for? And are you looking for show lines or working lines?

VGSR has a former brood bitch that was cast aside that is available for adoption. She developed a nasty uterine infection and we had to do an emergency spay in order to save her life. Check out Dixie under www.shepherdrescue.org

Apparently now that Dixie is comfortable in her foster home, she is possessive of her toys and bowls when it comes to the other dogs. She is terrific with people from all aspects. Very friendly, affectionate pooch.

Looking for a male from working lines, or show, though I'd like to avoid the extremely sloped back. We're just looking for a pet, so neutered, or we will have him neutered. Anything under 2 years old. The dog would get lots of time outside, we are active runners, but would also like something that is content with being in the house, which I find most GSDs quite willing to sit on the couch with you! lol

Have you ruled out a rescue group?

Under the age of two years is not considered "older" by breeders. When you ask a breeder for an older dog, it is generally a retired brood or show dog that they would like to retire and place as a family pet.

It sounds as though a rescue group with the dog in foster care in a home environment would be a more viable option for you than most breeders. You might find a breeder who got a former puppy back to re-home due to an unforseen circumstance with the initial owner if you are lucky. With today's economy, this is happening a little bit more frequently than in previous years.

Thanks for the adive. We have contacted rescue groups, just trying to look at all of our options. I'd love to have a puppy, but I have to be realistic about how much work that is, no matter the level of cuteness.

I'm geographically challenged when it comes to the States, but when I was searching for a slightly older pup, I was recommended:
Drache Feld :: german shepherd/schutzhund
Also, I know my breeder, Robin and Carlos Huerta Hof have some older pups with them. But I'm not sure if these pups are available or not. Robin is a member on the board, and you can try contact her via PM.

I would suggest a rescue or shelters. Many shelters clean out there facilities this time of year around the holidays and you just might get lucky and be able to save one from being put to sleep. They come usually neutered and with all current vaccines
