Default Looking for GSD Breeder in Texas

I am looking for a GSD puppy for a family companion. I have 1 year old twins and a 12 year old son. I love the way the DDR dogs look, but will not work or show. I do not want a over the top drive dog. Also, with small children, which is better, male or female?

Either sex should be fine with children if raised around them and both children and dog know how to gently interact with each other, never leave them unsupervised though.

Are you looking specifically for a DDR pup because of build or color?

Since you say you like the way DDR dogs look, I take it you're looking for a working line dog? There aren't any DDR breeders in Texas I can recommend to you, but there are some very nice working line breeders. For someone getting a working line dog as a family companion and their first GSD, I would recommend Meerhout in Austin or Germelhaus in Dallas. Both of those will take the time to match you with the perfect dog for you.

There are a lot of breeders that, if you go to them looking for a big dark sable, will sell you a big dark sable that will be way too much dog for someone just looking for a family companion, and you and the dog will be miserable. Mellodee at Germelhaus and Jesse at Meerhout will both take the time to match you with a dog that matches you in looks and temperament.

I have had a DDR that was over the top in drive. I kept here for three years and had to end up selling her to a breeder in Chicago. The American I have seen seem to be less mentally sound than the DDR.

I have a friend with a Gemmelhaus female and she's great! He got her from them when she was 8 mos old at a reduced price. You might look into getting an older pup

Definitely check with MelloDee - she just had 2 older puppies returned - one from an allergic owner and another that I can't remember why, but she'll fill you in. Great dogs and a great breeder.
