We have been doing a lot of research for our next pup. We want to get a male when Kona reaches about 1yo. We know what we want it, we want to be sure that we find a good reputable breeder. We prefer working lines and we want a dar black sable but would not mind a black shepherd either. We have been looking at a few different breeders that seem to throw these colors and would like your opinions. Also, how long before we want to get a pup should we be getting in contact with the breeder and getting on a waiting list? Does it just depend on which breeding we are interested in? We are in Utah and something a little closer to us would be cool cuz we could go pick it up but we are looking for the best for us so any location is fine. I have listed the breeders we have been looking at so far. We want a pup with good nerves and good drives. We are planning to do Schutzhund with the pup and my husband would like to get into search and rescue work with the male as Kona and I will hopefully be doing therapy work. Any input is appreciated.

A very recent thread on Sequoyah. Sequoyah Shepherds....
If you do a search for the other, there also was a very recent discussion about True Haus.

Just remember black sables and blacks are rare colors. Even if there is blacks and/or black sables in the litter you have reserved, it doesn't mean you'll end up with one of them.

I actually found all three of the breeders below by searching the forums. I have read some great information about those 3 and they tend to throw the colors we want and they seem very reputable. So far these are the 3 we are going to talk to. I would just like the input of knowledgeable people here as to how to approach. When to start pursuing the breeders, how long before the breeding we want to put a deposit on. Also if there are other breeders that you would recommend to get what we are looking for.

I can speak for True Haus, they are great people to work with and have some very nice bloodlines. They are dedicated and stand by their dogs. We train out there sometimes so I have been able to see their dogs work--high drive, biddable, powerful, resilient, and good nerve. It can take a good while to get a pup from them, so if you are serious, I'd go ahead and get on their list. Have you talked to Cindy yet?

I haven't talked to them yet but I will probably email them shortly. We have an upcoming breeding or two in mind at each so I will think that will be one of the deciding factors as to which we go with, which breeding we can get listed for.
Thanks though, that is really helpful. From what I have read and looking at their dogs I really like True Haus, it isn't my husbands first choice, he would prefer Vom Gildalf but I think we would be lucky to get a dog from any of the 3 we are looking at.

Just a thought, and I'm sure you've thought of this already but I'm nosey and have to put my $0.02 in. . . it's very cool and very fun to have a 1-year old and a puppy. It's great to have a four-year old and a five-year old. A twelve-year old and a thirteen-year old are not so much fun. When one needs a hip replaced for $5k and the other has DM. . . not so much fun. When your two beloved dogs pass away within months or weeks of each other. . . well, you get the idea. Personally I'd suggest spacing your dogs farther apart, simply due to end-of-life issues.

As far as your question on how early to contact the breeder, do it within a six month time period of when you want a pup and let them know you are interested in future litters.
Black and sable pups are available in several of the litters I got Karlo from. Depends on the breeding match of course. I agree with spacing out the age, my females are a year apart and Karlo came here when the youngest was 2.5. So I know I'll have seniors all together, but whatever. I would add (Wildhaus Kennels, Working German Shepherd Breeder in Michigan) to your list Last edited by onyx'girl; 09-10-2011 at 05:19 PM. |

You need to decide how important color is to you. Your husbands choice of breeder, flat out says on their site that color is NOT guaranteed. If there isn't a puppy for you in the color you want, you can NOT move your deposit to another litter. You either take a different color our you get nothing. (Just something to think about BEFORE you put a deposit on a litter.
