Default Looking to purchase young dog from reputable breeder and trainer

I am looking for a young dog for first most a companion and secondly personal protection and estate protection. We (my husband and I) have had solely german shepherds for the past twenty to twenty five years, actually longer as both of our families had German Shepherds as pets when we were kids.

This is my first time having to officially look for a trained german shepherd and I am finding it a lot harder than I thought it would be. We were lucky enough to have a good friend that trained dogs for police work and he had helped us with finding and training most of our dogs we have had. We do not have any children. We have a large horse farm and also do a good bit of traveling, always with our dogs. We just recently lost our female Shepherd to cancer and our male a year ago just from old age.

We are looking for two young dogs. Ideally we would like a male and a female, this is not set in stone if the right dogs come along, but we have had the best luck and least amount of conflicts between dogs this way. We do not nor are we interested in breeding. I do not care about papers or showing of any kind. We spend pretty much all day every day with our dogs and are very active with a lot of outdoor activities, the majority of our days are spent outside all year long. Prefer a more intense serious dog to a happy go lucky "goofy" type.

Anyone that has a dog that may fit the bill or knows of someone who may have one available or a reputable breeder please let me know. Thank you

Try contacting carmspack here of this forum. Carmen knows her dogs and places many dogs with law enforcement.

Doggiedad Yes, you are definitely wrong. I am in in no way posting for or in any way affiliated with buddlilly. Though after reading their thread I realize we have remarkable similarities in what we are searching for.

Andaka Thank you for the help. I did send carmspack an email about what I am looking for and hope to hear back soon. Thanks again for your help.

Well, I looked at that other thread...WOW!! 35K for a dog? Geez laweez what a waste of money.

Anyhow....you might want to look into Eurosport. The always have a lot of trained adults they are selling. I've heard good things...seen a couple nice dogs come from them. SAR dog as well as a nice dog imported for the purpose of PP. Actually, he is on the forums...pets4life i think is the screen name. He came down with her a couple times to the French Ring club that I trained at and I really liked the dog.

However, I will say that it would be very beneficial to line up a trainer NOW that can help you. The one thing with the gentleman who got the dog from Eurosport was that he had this great dog...but NO idea how to work her and was having a hard time finding GOOD PPD trainers. I really don't know if the dog will every be completley "ready to go" because they are at a bit of an impasse it seems--have a dog but not really sure how to work it and get the most out of it.

Just be wary with PPD dogs that stable temmperament is by far the most important thing. There is a big liability that goes along with owning one.

PLUS you don't just get a dog that's trained..YOU need to then start up the learning to properly use that dog. Otherwise, the dog will just become a regular great dog you WAY overpaid for. Or a liability with the lack of guidance, training, and weekly upkeep of skills by the new owners.

There's a reason Police Officers have to train daily/weekly WITH their dogs, and if you want a dog for similar reasons you need to learn and keep up the training yourself.

Frankly, I'd just get one great GSD and 'use' the fact it LOOKS and SOUNDS scary as my protection. I know the training to keep a PPD dog up with it's skills is much more than I have time to learn and keep up with.

I don't know where you are, but you can search "Von Falconer Training" in Santa Cruz, CA. They will fly them to you and spend a few days with you. They recently had a dog sent in from NY for police training.

We bought our dog from him, always wants us to do protection work with him but we are not into that.
