If a breeder chooses a puppy for what?
I don't understand the question.

If a breeder choses a puppy for you. Do they take into consideration color. Like let's say I'd prefer a black and red pup over an all black pup would that be considered when choosing the right puppy. This is hypothetical.

My breeder picked Glock for me. I told her that I prefer males, my experience with GSD's, what kind of life I led, as far as activity, etc. Once the puppies were born and there were a ton of males she asked with everything else if I had a preference in shade, they were all sables. I initially told her a lighter sable, but decided I wanted something completely different look wise, from my previous GSD, so told her dark. When I told her I changed my mind I also said that it really didn't matter, so long as the personality was what I was looking for. She said she had the perfect one for me.
So, depending on the breeder, they will take color into consideration, but the right puppy for you may not be the color you prefer.

I have grown to LOVE the dark/black sables, so if in the future when I get a puppy that is something I will take into consideration. However, if there is a breeding I REALlY want a puppy from and the one that fits me is not that coloring, I would take it.

The breeders I have dealt try to match to the best of what you are looking for and that could certainly include color if that matters to you. I made a list to communicate what was important to me. Once the pups are old enough to evaluate, they could tell you what options they have for you. Most likely they will select based on temperament first and then if there is a choice between two or more color would come into play.

If color is very important to you, you may want to look at what each litter will produce in advance.

The breeder should work with you regarding your preferences for color, sex, drives etc. Be very clear as to what you want & be sure that the breeder can meet your expectations in a timely fashion. I prefer sable but the breeder I selected doesn't produce many sables. Of the breedings that I especially liked only one had any chance of producing a sable. The breeding I liked the most had no chance of a sable so I happily opted for B&T. For others color is more important & there's nothing wrong with that provided one doesn' t neglect health & temperament.

If color was important to me I think I could easily find a suitable GSD in any color/pattern but panda, the dilutes or possibly black & red. Panda & the dilutes aren't that common & black & red seems to only be common in GSL. (shrug)I'm just not enamored of either GSL or ASL.

Prior to getting Masi, (and a couple of my other dogs that the breeders picked for me)..I explained my lifestyle, what I wanted in a dog, FIRST and foremost. Of course I had a preference for color, but that was low on the list..

I got the dog I wanted, (breeder picked her) and as a bonus got the color I wanted. I would have had no problem going with another female out of the litter a completely different color if that puppy would have been a better fit for me..

I think everyone has a color preference, me included, but if it doesn't have what else I'm looking for, I'm not interested..

Colour wasn't important to me at all, either was gender and I just let my breeder know that.

Temperament and nerve were of the most importance to me, then working ability/drives, etc.

My breeder and a few others who evaluated the litter over the 12 week period knew what I was looking for, wanted and what I could handle and choose accordingly. So far, she is everything I wanted and I am very excited to see how she continues to grow.

I will admit that I was hoping that I would get one of the darker sables, I never told any of them that though, but I do like the look of them and was ecstatic that I got the temperament, nerve, drives, AND the colour I wanted.

Color is important to me, but I look at the parents and what they have produced. I won't chose color OVER temperament, so if the parents aren't going to produce the color and type/conformation I am looking for, I just look for a different litter. Basically I want the entire package, and if I don't get it that is fine, I will look elsewhere or wait. I don't feel I should have to sacrifice any aspect of what I want.
