Default Prices?

I am JUST getting started looking for a GSD. I obviously want to purchase from a reputable breeder, but am unsure of the average price of a puppy? I see some for sale online for $500 (not what I'm looking for) all the way up to nearly $10,000. What is the average price of a pup from a reputable breeder? I emailed a breeder that I am mildly interested in, but they asked me to call and speak to them in order to get a price. I am really just concerned with whether they are even in my price range or not... Help?!

$1,200 - $1,800 for a working line
$2,000 and up for a show line.

I like both working and show and of the breeders I have seriously considered or even committed to (not all worked out b/c some litters don't take, not a match, etc) the working lines were $1000 up and the show lines were $1800 up.

I am also researching puppies, and have found very reputable show-line breeders starting at 1500. But the range that was posted looks about right.

Depends if we're talking about German show lines or American show lines.

American show lines are looking to be around $1200-1500 right now....with people still charging high prices for bitches.

Otherwise I very much agree with the ranges posted.

Is there a big difference between German and American show lines? I think we would prefer a working line though...

depends on titles (yes or no), breed survey (yes or now) and pedigrees.

Breed Types & Related Families
Doing research and supporting a good breeder, no matter which lines you go with is most important. Prices are pretty consistent with good breeders, there are a few breeders that will have price brackets, that doesn't necessarily mean they have better dogs!
If you have a GSD club or SchH club, maybe visit to look at the different types and actually seeing them will help you in your choice, and what you want to do with your future pup will have you deciding as well...

Thanks so much for that link! I think we like the way the German Working Line is described, but we really want the black and tan coloring. We really like more black than tan, and I REALLY like the red and tan, but I see that's not common in the working line.
