Anyone into Ball Pythons here?

A freind is giving me one for my daughter next week. Bought all the stuff , waiting for it to come in. Was just looking to chat about feeding methods/general husbandry questions :)

I prefer to stay on the outside of a ball python .

took care of one over the summer for my husband's science department while he was still teaching.

I like snakes , but man , this one was powerful stinky. I did not like the raising the live food , rats and mice , then choosing one as the dinner .

all garden snakes are welcome .

Strange the only smell issues I have is when they soil the enclosures about once a week. And thats because I have a lot. When I just had a few there was never a wiff even when they defecated.
Rats on the other hand require a lot more maintenance to keep the smell down. I have an air purifyer running 24/7 next to the rat rack.

I used to have 2 Balls, but got rid of them when we got married.

Both were domestic bred and very good beginner snakes.

I also had a couple corn snakes and a fairly large female Columbian Red Tail Boa.

Snakes are fun :)

Great! Thanks :)

A few questions :

I will only have one so will be picking up her meal at the pet store up the street when it is meal time. She is about 400 grams , guess she will eat every 5 to 7 days or so . So it will alive , not frozen. Should I kill it first for the snake?

I got a neodesha 24 " standard cage that I will be using with 4" inch heat tape and a Herpstat 1 ..is 24" big enough for a 400 gram snake? What size would the snake get before I upgrade to a 36" ?

I plan to use butcher paper as substrate , only because I hate dealing with newsprint ink. Plus I do not receive any papers lol.

I got a hidebox and rock bowl...

Any other recommendations?

I had a few when I was 19 which was like 24 years ago..I kept them in glass aquariums which I know is not best..but I do not remember any smells what so ever??

Id say that she wont necessarily eat everytime food is offered. SO keep a spare cage or container to house the rodent.
BPs are tempermental when it comes to eating. Some eat 6 months out of the year. Some eat everytime food is offered and some go off eating for an entire year. Some will eat prekilled or frozen / thawed rodents some will eat live.

Biggest pain with BPs is the issues some of them can have with eating. I try to keep most of my collection on frozen rodents but a fair portion of my younger animals are on live atm.

I keep adult females in an enclosure that is 20 by 16 inches. So yes your enclosure is big enough.

HAHA I actually thought you were being serious. Many keepers get rid of their collections for the other half. So I didnt even think twice.
