Driftwood

Since I got a larger aquarium for my red eared slider, I need to add some basking areas that actually come out of the water. Would it be safe if I used some driftwood from a creek? Is there a certain way I should sanitize it? Could I simply wash it off with water?

Boiling it is best. I got some big pieces for my aquarium and the best I could do was hot water. It made the water foggy and it's just now clearing up a couple weeks later
