It's been weeks since we got them, but my boyfriend and I finally got our pet rats!
Both are males. I named mine Atreus, he's the champagne hooded (tan & white w/ red eyes), approximately six months old.
My boyfriend named his Nanook. I'm not exactly sure what he is, but I think he may be an Irish. He's the black and white, approximately three months old.
my mom used to adopted hamsters and gerbils from the SPCA. they had more personality than I expected. ended up adopting a syrian hamster who had been running mazes at my college, he was awesome. congrats on your new critters
Growing up, my family had multiple pairs of rats at one time or another, and they actually got on really well with our old female GSD. Domesticated rats are incredibly curious and friendly animals with a lot more personality than your typical hamster. They would climb all over her while she was sleeping, and she would herd them back into the cage when she decided they'd had enough fun
The pic's fuzzy, so I can't tell if those are litter boxes in the bottom corners? If not, I suggest getting one because they'll use it - for poo at least, keeping the cage cleaner. I use the recycled newspaper (unscented) cat litter for this. Also, you might want to hang some towels over the cage to block the window because rats prefer dim lighting and it might be too much for them in that location. I have half my bars covered, as well as the top. They'll chew this material, lol.
my friend just lost one of her babies this weekend, he had just turned two

not my cup of tea but would like to ask how your dog responds to having rats in the house.
Actually, Varick's crate and the rat cage are side-by-side. He's very curious. not aggressive at all.
Harley likes to come in the room and sniff them, he's also curious, but he's grown accustomed to having small pets around the house. I let my pet rabbit and Harley run around in the backyard outside together, they never bothered each other. Practically friends. It was adorable.
