What could I have done? OT

Today I was at Walmart checking out at one of those self-check out centers. When I began my transaction I looked down and saw 2 ten dollar bills sticking out of the machine. Obviously the last person had forgotten their change. I looked around. There was no one that appeared to be looking for their money. So I took the money up to the walmart employee overseeing all of the self-check out machines. I just couldn't think of anything else to do with the money. I feel like I probably just gave her a big tip - which don't get me wrong is okay given how much Walmart employees make - but what I really wanted was to get the money back to the person who left it there. Was there anything else I could have done? I know it is unlikely to happen again but I want some ideas if it does.

Thanks to all who respond. I know it is off topic but this seemed like a good forum for this question since I want to ask a large group of people.

I had that happen to me at Smiths recently! I counted my change and it was $20 dollars short?? I reached in and there it was?? Maybe the machines are starting to get worn out??
You did what you could can't ask for more than that! :)

One time I was in the hospital. My husband and I went outside for some fresh air. Because I was on an IV drip, we couldn't go far and just sat right outside the doors. When we sat on the bench, my husband saw a small wad of money directly behind the bench. It turned out to be over $100. We sat outside for over an hour before we went back inside.

He went to the office and told the clerk there that he found some money. If anyone was missing it, they could call him and give him the exact amount. He didn't want to turn it in for fear that the clerk (or someone else) wouldn't be honest. He also told the information clerk in the lobby.

No one ever called.

You did your level best to return the money to the rightful owner....once that effort was exhausted you did another proper thing by giving it to an employee with the hopes they would return it to the rightful owner if they came back and asked. Regardless whether the employee has the same integrity as you do....you did what you did...and it was honorable. Both you and the employee have to live with your consciences....I'm sure yours will make for a soft pillow to sleep on.... who knows about the employee as she will live with hers one way or the other.....and I disagree...with the rationalization that a Walmart employee deserves a "tip" which comes from some others absentmindedness or loss. The only other thought which comes to mind as to what you might do next time, if you feel mostly certain the monies will not get back to the rightful owner ....maybe next time you are at the grocery store, buy some food with the money and donate it to the food shelter programs many stores have....or any other worthy charity.

Ah, that would have been a good idea. I could have told someone in the main office what happened. That way there would have been another person who knew plus if the person lost it calls they will probably get the main office anyway. The people in the main office probably should have known.

I can understand why you sat there for over an hour. That was very kind of you. Especially with that much money. I couldn't really stand around the check out area but I did think of it.

Super G, when I said I was giving her a tip I meant if the rightful owner never comes back. In that case somebody has to get the money and I would rather it be her than the store.

We were just sitting out there anyway. If I found the money at the check out, I wouldn't have hung around. But I would have reported it. I just wouldn't have told them the amount found.

My niece found a very nice ring one time at the grocery store. She turned it in and filled out a form. It took over nine months for the store to finally release the ring back to her because no one claimed it. Even then, they gave her the run around when she tried to claim it.

Oh, so you didn't turn the money in? You took it home and gave the office your name? Is that what you did? I really didn't want to get that involved - having a stranger possibly come to my home. But now that you mention it I probably should have filled out some paperwork at the time. Then there would have been an official record of me turning the money in. Next time I will ask to fill out paperwork like your sister did with the ring.

Oh, so this explains how it could have happened. It also makes me aware of how careful I have to be when using those machines.
