Default Need guidance

I just bought my first gsd and am very excited about it. I have aleays had dogs growing up but this will be my first time having an indoor dog and im trying to house train him but after reading a few posts i fear that alot of the advice has been giving me has been so very wrong. Alot of it has been mostly rubbing the nose in the accidents and a spank but im glad i found this app, he is a little stubborn guy but i also understand hes a puppy only 8 weeks old and this is my first time trying to train anything so any help and advice will be greatly appreciated

Take your dog outside often, like every two hours and about 15 minutes after a meal. Stop rubbing your dogs nose in it's waste and no spanking. Bring some small treats with you when you take your pup outside to pee or poop and and he goes, praise him and give him a treat.

Thank you SO MUCH for recognizing the very bad advice you've been given about house training. What Gretchen says is good, and there's also lots more info here about it, likely in the puppy section. It's been my experience that shepherds are inherently very clean and quite easy to house train. Be patient...this is just a baby.

And puppies can be strong willed, but "stubborn" is a description that is more applicable to people. There is so much good information on this site, study up on shepherd behavior here...welcome to the board!

Welcome to the forums!

Kudos to you for recognizing the bad advice! Every time he does his business outside, even if it's a quick squirt, throw a freaking party with lots of praise and treats. Also, don't discipline if you don't see it happen, just clean it up and go about your business. If he goes to pee, just say "No!" very firmly and take him outside. Once he relieves himself, throw a party! You want him to think, "If I pee inside, I get nothing. I pee outside, I get a party!"
