Parrot people, need your thoughts!
So I may be totally nuts but I'm hoping to start working again in a few months despite my pain issues, I just can't stand being dependent anymore!!!
So I'm thinking of saving up my money and getting another parrot, right now I have a Senegal. I've had plenty of experience with parrots, I used to hand raise them for a specialty mom and pop pet shop... God I miss that place it was one of a kind. But I've dealt with everything from little parrotlets all the way up to macaws. It's been my dream to own a scarlet macaw but I don't know if I'm ready to commit to such a large loud bird and frankly their beaks do make me a tad nervous. :p My ideal bird would be a cuddler, my Senegal is pretty independent and only likes to be petted on the head so I'm looking for something a bit more... Needy? I know Cockatoo right lol but they make me nervous with their tendency to go nuts and the sheer levels of loudness. Right now I'm thinking Goffins cockatoo, African grey.... Would you have any other suggestions or know a good forum where I can ask this? Sorry if that was a bit rambly. :p |
Here are some of the bird people. You can PM them, if they miss your thread.

Well, since you asked for opinions, I wouldn't get any of the larger birds, especially the cockatoos. Cockatoos are notorious for being rehomed due to their special needs. Sadly, keeping a cockatoo in a cage is like keeping a toddler in a cage - they are so smart and have so many needs I just don't think it's fair to the bird. The only cockatoo I've seen that I didn't feel sorry for had an entire basement as his living quarters (ropes, ladders, feeding stations...amazing place, really), and his owner spent a fortune on toys and other destroyables.
These two caiques are my favorite birds to watch of all time. |
Forgot to add that a great on-line avian community is www.avianavenue.com. These two birds' owner is a member there. She has a huge room for her birds. It's truly awesome, and she spends A LOT of TIME and MONEY keeping her birds well entertained. Honestly, I don't know how she does it.
I've had a few birds over the last thirty years, but right now I only have a little parrotlet. He is an absolute nut, and extremely active. He lives in a nice large cage with lots of toys I rotate, but even such a little bird can get bored. |
No worries, definitely want honest opinions! I've got tons of time to research and make the right choice too, I'm in NO rush.
I will definitely check out and peruse around that forum. I may end up going back to my old favorite, the lovebird... The last one I had I hand raised myself, taught him to fly, everything and losing him was devastating and I haven't been able to look at lovebirds since. That last video was hilarious. :) |
So maybe not what you're looking for, but my mom used to breed cockatiels. They were super cuddly and pretty trainable for smallish birds. =)

I adore my cockatoos, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd stick with cockatiels. They have all the personality of the Cockatoos but are a more manageable size and not nearly as messy and noisy.

You might be right, if I had less pets I think I would really love a small cockatoo... One of my first birds was a cockatiel and she loved only men but I was eventually able to get her to bond with me, she was a great bird with funny quirks... I miss her! I've always wanted a yellow cockatiel too...
Thanks guys for the advice and possibly keeping me from getting in over my head. :D I will add Cockatiels to my list of birds to consider. |
I have two Moluccan Cockatoos and they are definitely a piece of work, but are so worth it to me.I had 4 cockatiels before and they are a lot more managable than the Cockatoos are,Sun Conures are also nice little birds. This isn't really a picture thread, but here are my two:

Feel free to post whatever pictures you want! I don't think I could do Moluccan's because of the noise level especially as we have lots of close by neighbors. I love Goffin's though and they are still on my list. :help:
That's a really cool setup that you've got for them! |
