My 18 year old niece went to take her driver's test today and she failed for the 4th time. She's been practing really hard and is actually a good driver, but she messed up on the three point turn. So now she has to wait another 60 days before she can try it again. I just wanted to know how long it took some of you to get your license? I personally had to take the test 3 times before I got it.

In NY I had to wait a mandatory period after turning 16, but I took the test on the first day possible and passed on my first try.

My daughter(17 in August) failed her first one last October(the parallel parking/3pt. turn got her right out of the gate!)
She had only driven her car a few times before the test and wasn't familiar with the lower profile compared to driving my van. It was a godsend, because she is impatient and not real mature as far as I'm concerned, and seldom drove in snowy/icy conditions. She has had the car since she turned 17(older grand prix), so drives with my DH or me in the vehicle. She use to race go-carts and has driven several motorized vehicles(boats, mini-bikes, motorcycles) in her young life, so driving a car comes naturally, so does the need for speed. ![]() I'm waiting for her grades to come up and her attitude to change before I schedule the next test....and IMO, she should pay for this one on her own($45). I got my license in the late '70's and passed the first time. I truly don't think many kids are mature enough at 16 to handle that responsibility...though some states it is 14! I have a license but I shouldn't. I guessed on the vision test. I got my first license at 35 so I could drive my son to a private school and I drove for about 5 years. Now I haven't driven in seven. I only keep my license up to date in case of emergency.
I passed on the first try. My son failed once. He wasn't allowed to drive while he was in Iraq, they thought it was too dangerous. |

Got my permit at 15, did well in the class, so I didn't have to take the written part at the driving place. Only had to take the driving part, passed first time at 16. My son also passed the first time. Here the kids have to have 50 hours of driving in different situations...dark, light, highway, street, etc before they can go get their license.

I passed the first time I took my road test at 16 but I would hope so. My teacher was a traffic cop!
One of the things that helped was practice. The day I got my learner's license I became the official family chauffeur. If anyone wanted to go anywhere I had to drive them (with the licensed driver in the passenger seat). |
