Getting frustrated (job hunt)
 

So, I have officially started looking for a new job in the city (and surrounding areas) that I want to move too.

I am currently about 3 hours North of where I want to go, with no time to go to that area to look for jobs. I am relying on the internet and job banks to help me find something.

I have contacted an agency to help me but to be honest, I don't hold much hope with them. They are suppose to be well known in that area but the job listings they are telling me about seem rather well... crappy.

I know how much money I *need* to make to stay afloat and secure and I know how much money I *want* to make in order to compensate what I am making now and to maintain my hobbies and short term goals.

I am also not sure what I want to do... lol... which is another problem.

I have a MA in Cognitive Psychology, have over 15 years of retail experience and have been a Store Manager for some time, where I ran a business quite successfully for a major Canadian retailer. I have a very good track record and quite the list of accomplishments from my time as a Manager which I am proud of.

Although I have this awesome education backing me, it is not something I want to do with my life (shh.. don't tell my father! ;) ) and have come to realize that by working in the field.

I also have a diploma in Early Childhood Education but do not want to work with children - at all. ;)

So, help people.. give me some ideas!

The job I am currently at is not able to transfer me to another location so I would be starting from scratch.

What about becoming a DM or HR manager with the retail company you work for?

I am not working for the retail company - I am in the mental health field at the moment.

I know your frustration.
I lost my job on January 18th and was hired at Paradise Bakery today.
I was putting in applications EVERYWHERE, every day, sending e-mails, etc. Paradise was my first interview I got and I was almost peeing in excitement when they offered me the job, LOL. Losing my job at Walgreens was a blessing in disguise, though.

I know it can be frustrating, but they're out there! :)

Jobs in Canada are difficult to find, even in cities full of opportunity and people like Toronto. I can only imagine it to be more difficult in your city of choice.

Yeah, I think I am frustrated because I can't make it out there to look.. lol.

I knew this may take a while but I am just a type-A personality and want "my plan" settled... LOL.

I am also moving to an area that is not doing so well economically right now (Windsor area) so that is also going to add to the issues I face.

Got laid off as a biologist almost two years ago. Been working but at a job nothing up to my caliber. Have submitted around 100 resumes to job openings and gotten one interview for an internship. I was out of town for the second interview and didn't get the internship. I know the frustration. I wish you all the best. C:

My brother in law has a PHD and it took him over 2 years to find a job in his field of study. He did a few odd jobs while he searched but his credit took a beating because of the low pay. He finally landed a job with a hospital that paid to move his whole family across the country. Perseverance will pay off eventually. (However it helps to know what you are looking for).

Since you already have a job-even if its not where you want to be-you can take your time and look for something-try the govt-

I wish you the best. I left a senior management position to go active duty in the US Army after 9/11. Thought it would not hurt my chances of getting back to work when I was discharged. Last April, the Army said I was at my maximun years of commisioned service, so out as an LTC. Was told to take the military "stuff" off my resume because civilian employers weren't interrested in that, and am still looking.
