I currently live in the midwest and am considering relocating to Alaska. Is there anyone out there that lives there and would allow me to PM for some information on what it is really like and ask a few questions? Thanks.

I don't have any experience living there, but I just want to say, it's so beautiful that I was thinking of moving up there. Of course, I had always planned to visit again in the winter to see what it was like being dark all the time. I only visited in August when the sun was up until 2-3 am.
I have heard that if you make it through your first year, you'll be okay.

Specifically what area of Alaska?
The climate is different in the various areas, as well as yearly snowfall and cold temperatures vary by area. I am in the Yukon, we are neighbors to Alaska, I visit there 2 - 3 times a year to work with my dogs breeder and the ScH club there. Specifically, we visit Palmer/Wasilla and Anchorage. BEAUTIFUL there! |

We are thinking of the Anchorage area, but welcome food for thought on other places.
Am wanting to know how the job market is, particularly construction? Is it very dog friendly? Are there strict limits regarding how many animals you can have? Are dogs welcome in many public places? What is the cost of living like? I have heard that there is no sales tax? How many hours of daylight is there really during winter? Anything that comes to mind really, any differences or things that aren't really that different. Thanks for any information. |

Hours of daylight...!? Heh.
This is something to be aware of. SADD. If you're prone - get one of those "happy" lights, I got one at Costco anyway, last year due to the lack of daylight in the winter here in WA state... Daylight Hours Alaska: Sunrise Sunset Facts | Alaska.org Blog Oh, Alaska has a sales tax but it was less than WA state (which is 7. something %)...cost of living is higher. Milk (where I visited) was over $4.00 /gal. I think it's more dog friendly but I do think a travel trailer or motor home may be the way to go until you can get settled in. Then rent a travel trailer spot. Last edited by msvette2u; 02-15-2013 at 10:45 PM. |
