Not a cat but a small dog that will hunt and kill gophers, moles and mice. Our property is overrun with these little critters.
I was interested in adding a small dog in the future but I guess it has to be sooner. It would need to be a size that can fit in a Sherpa bag in an airplane. Anyone of you have experience with good small mousing breeds? Also if you have a good mouser, did he learn it form his mother or by instinct alone?

I don't want to take this off topic, but why not a cat? Mine get all of those, no training needed.

I have a GSD that hunts. He picked it up when he was an only dog on long walks along the fields and hedgerows. This was in the autumn when mice are most plentiful. He would usually get one or two voles or field mice on every walk. I taught him not to eat what he caught so he brings it to me. (I'll never go hungry

My German shepherd did our hunting (moles are very bad in our area). Unfortunately, since moles have runs along the ground, my dog would dig up the whole run until she found the critter and take it out. That meant she had massive (but shallow) excavations all over the yard... but we had no more moles!

My parents have a Jack Russell Terrier that will kill any small creature, and happily bring them into the house as treasure. He will dig up moles, mice, squirrels, whatever.
