Illiterate Much?

Spelling errors don't bother me nearly as much as those that can't distiguish between 'then' and 'than' and when it should be used in a sentence.

Another one would be 'they're', 'their', and 'there'.

More than once, I've created a work related letter where I've typed "I apologize for the incontinence." instead of 'inconvenience'. Due to the fact that I have a mental block on the spelling of 'inconvenience' and spell check corrects it to 'incontinence'.

Try explaining that one to your peers.

Poor spelling and grammar drive me crazy as a teacher. The keyboard on my iPhone or iPad doesn't always do what my fingers say. I have no idea how to edit? Can someone tell me?

I hate poor spelling or bad grammar. I type the bulletins and newsletters for our church and I proofread very carefully. But I sit down in church on Sunday morning, open the bulletin and immediately see a mistake. I don't know why it is so hard to see problems until they are in print.

The biggest for me is leaving the "R" off of your. I type in you. "You dog." I thought it was just a typing thing. My fingers go off without my brain. So, yesterday, I left my son a note. "Do you homework." My daughter was quick to point out my mistake. I said, "OH! I meant Do yo homework." LOL! GEEZ!

Then there are those pesky sound alike words....there, their, they're, to, two, too. Hmmm. It's not me. It's the English language.

Hitting submit now. Sure I missed something. Oh well.

This is why writers hire people to proof for them. It is sometimes difficult to divorce the thought behind your words from the visual cues of your written words.

And for the retentive grammar police, it helps to assume that the poster does have a grasp of the English language and that this board does not represent the sum total of of his/her abilities.
